Senior Environmental Risk Analyst

Date: Jun 26, 2022

Location: Oak Ridge, TN, US, 37830

Company: Oak Ridge National Laboratory

Requisition Id 6806

The Biodiversity and Sustainable Systems Section (BSS) within the Environmental Sciences Division(ESD), at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), is seeking a technical professional to lead and develop health and environmental risk analysis approaches and models to advance understanding of health risks from potential environmental exposures to hazardous substances. You will join the Environmental Risk and Energy Analysis Group in leading and developing analyses that advance innovative approaches for environmental exposure pathway analytics, environmental physics modeling, and dose/risk assessment within decision-analytic frameworks.

ESD is an interdisciplinary research and development organization with more than 60 years of achievement in local, regional, national, and international environmental research. Our vision is to expand scientific knowledge and develop innovative strategies and technologies that will strengthen the nation’s leadership in creating solutions to help sustain the Earth’s natural resources. Our scientists conduct research, develop technology, and perform analyses to understand and assess responses of environmental systems at the environment-human interface and the consequences of alternative energy and environmental strategies.

The BSS Section explores how genes, organisms, populations, and communities influence, and are influenced by, the management, health, and sustainability of ecological systems. Researchers develop and implement tools and methods to quantify and mitigate threats to biodiversity and ecosystem services. They advance the state of water resources science and engineering through multidisciplinary research focused on data analytics, model simulation, engineering design, decision support and visualization. Scientists are developing advanced simulations to understand human health, economic, and environmental protection dimensions of existing and emerging sustainable energy alternatives.

Major Duties/Responsibilities

You will have the opportunity to work closely with ORNL scientists to lead and develop models and advanced data analytics for environmental risk assessments and computational tools. The primary responsibilities are to;

  • Lead development of mathematical models to gain insight into exposure of hazardous substances in environmental media (air, soil, water) and biota utilizing computational frameworks as standalone applications and online calculators,
  • Develop and calibrate algorithms using field data from government, academic, and industry partners,
  • Perform rigorous model verification and validation analysis,
  • Collaborate in coupling risk analyses with advanced geospatial analysis, high-performance computing, and data visualization,
  • Augment capabilities in environmental health assessment and strengthen connectivity to develop upstream features and improvements to knowledge-based information systems including open source projects like RAIS, SADA and VISL, and
  • Preparing research results for sponsors, peer reviewers, technical exchanges, risk training workshops, and conferences.

Minimum Requirements

  • B.S. degree with 15+ years of relevant experience or M.S. degree with 10+ years of relevant experience in environmental science, biology, ecology or related discipline and experience in health and environmental risk analysis
  • Experience with Superfund risk assessment models and regulatory frameworks including screening levels and Federal ARARs for chemicals and radionuclides
  • Experience with contaminant transport in environmental media including volatile chemical vaporization from soil, wind-driven soil particulate emission, and mechanical particularization modeling
  • Experience with radiation field modeling and analysis from radiologically contaminated soil, concrete, wood, glass, drywall, and steel for radiation dose/risk assessments
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills and the ability to communicate with scientific and technical audience.

Preferred Requirements

  • Experience working with vapor intrusion modeling and indoor air risk assessments
  • Experience leading development of user-facing information systems for technical applications
  • Demonstrated experience in web tool development and computational tools
  • Demonstrated strong interpersonal skills and personal motivation
  • The ability to lead and work with a dynamic, interdisciplinary team
  • 15+ years experience in the following areas:

- Radiological dose/risk assessment

- Web design and management
