Purpose:

The Information Technology Services Directorate at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory is seeking qualified applicants for a Senior Linux Engineer for the Research & Development Systems Engineering (RDSE) Group. The RDSE group exists to solve complex IT problems with advanced hardware, R&D software applications, and tools; while accounting for the different needs, preferences, and requirements within the research community at ORNL. We make science happen with technology.

  • Work planning and documentation - Jira/Confluence
  • Version Control Software - Gitlab/Github
  • Virtualization - Openstack
  • Configuration Management – Ansible
  • Monitoring, Analytics and Visualization - InfluxDB, Grafana, Telegraf
  • Other technologies utilized/supported include, but aren’t limited to Ceph, Python/Shell scripting, SLURM, and Containers

 

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

Primary duties include:

  • Create observability metrics and dashboards and assist in ongoing documentation efforts.
  • Build and customize containers for both operations and scientific research needs.
  • Install, configure, customize, and maintain Linux software including building software from source.
  • Hardware, software and Linux performance tuning and optimization.
  • Leverage process improvement and configuration management to drive and enforce policy standards.
  • Collaborate with researchers, developers, and other engineers to develop creative solutions and solve complex challenges.
  • Provide technical consulting in the selection and purchase of hardware and software.
  • Collaborate with security and policy teams to ensure our ability to keep pace with an evolving technological landscape.

We optimize our workflows and monitoring solutions to take advantage of our 24/7 operations staff, which significantly reduces the need for off-hours support. We also offer a flexible work schedule utilizing enterprise communication tools and collaboration solutions to stay in contact.

 

Qualifications Required:

  • Bachelor of science degree and 8 years of relevant experience. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • Experience managing a virtualized environment including tuning and maintenance.
  • Strong knowledge of Enterprise Linux distributions.
  • Experience with on premises cloud native platforms (OpenStack, VMware, or others).
  • Knowledge of enterprise class server/storage hardware.
  • Moderate fluency in at least one scripting language such as Shell or Python.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills suitable for user support and ability to work well with peer system administrators.
  • Experience managing Ansible or Salt in a production environment.
  • Strong working knowledge of system design.
  • Experience in an environment requiring change control processes.
  • Proven track record leading the implementation of technical efforts.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance is required.

 

Qualifications Desired:

  • Previous experience working in a government, scientific, or other highly technical environment.
  • Working knowledge of system out of band management (Idrac, BMC, Ilo, etc.).
  • Running or supporting a production OpenStack environment.
  • Experience working with metrics collection agents (Telegraf, check_mk, Zabbix, etc.).
