The Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) Nuclear and Criticality Safety Services Group within the Nuclear and Radiological Protection Division is seeking an experienced Nuclear Facility Safety Engineer.  ORNL is a U.S. Department of Energy science and energy laboratory, conducting basic and applied research to deliver transformative solutions to compelling problems in energy and security.  ORNL operates five non-reactor nuclear facilities and several radiological facilities that perform nuclear research and isotope production activities to support the advancement of the ORNL Science Mission.

 

Major Duties/Responsibilities

 

The ORNL Nuclear Safety Program is conducted in accordance with requirements contained in 10 CFR 830, Nuclear Safety Management.  The Nuclear Facility Safety Engineer position provides matrixed technical support to ORNL non-reactor nuclear facilities as follows:

 

Provides hazard categorization and radioactive material inventory management support to researchers and facility management organizations associated with below hazard category 3 (radiological) facilities.

Performs, documents, and maintains technical safety analyses for new and existing ORNL hazard category 1, 2, and 3 nuclear facilities and activities (i.e., hazard identification, hazard categorization, hazard analysis, accident analysis, and establishment of hazard controls and their functional requirements)

Coordinates with facility operations staff and local DOE Site Office to assist in the development and implementation of safety bases, analysis of policies, practices, and procedures

Validate, maintain, and operate computer codes to support nuclear facility and accelerator facility safety analysis activities.

Evaluates modifications, experiments, operations, and safety basis documentation in coordination with the ORNL independent safety review programs, etc.

Provide technical training for ORNL staff in nuclear safety basis development, implementation, and maintenance.  Validate, maintain, and operate computer codes to support nuclear facility and accelerator facility safety analysis activities.

 

Qualifications Required

 

Bachelor of Engineering degree in Nuclear Engineering or a Bachelor of Science degree in a related scientific discipline.

Ten or more years relevant operations or technical support experience at a DOE nuclear facility

Knowledge of hazard categorization and facility safety analysis techniques and demonstrated familiarity with DOE safety analysis requirements is required.

Demonstrated experience using radiation transport and/or shielding computer models

Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills; knowledgeable of standard workplace personal computer applications.

This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a clearance from the Department of Energy.  As such, this position is a workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program.

 

Qualifications Preferred

 

Research reactor and/or particle accelerator experience will be considered

Post-graduate degree in Nuclear Engineering or in a related scientific discipline

Superior technical writing and analytical skills

Active DOE Security Clearance
