Overview:

The Analytics and AI Methods at Scale (AAIMS) Group in the National Center for Computational Science (NCCS) seeks a highly motivated senior scientist to design and deploy infrastructure and services to deliver scalable AI models for sensitive, distributed data on HPC systems. In this role you will be expected to build AI algorithms for handling sensitive data using methods such as Federated Learning, Differential Privacy, and Secure Multiparty Computing, and Homomorphic Encryption, among others, and integrate these with novel backend infrastructure for handling sensitive data according to cybersecurity regulations.The NCCS and its Leadership Computing Program (OLCF) provides world class computing facilities to applications across all computational domains and disciplines, and through this position you will be able to impact and further the mission of NCCS and Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Major Duties / Responsibilities:
Responsibilities for this position include collaborating with researchers in various divisions to design secure algorithms using privacy preserving technologies and working closely with engineers in the NCCS Systems section to design novel HPC infrastructure solutions to deploy those algorithms in a scalable and secure manner.
Major responsibilities include:

  • Collaborate with internal and external researchers on privacy enabling AI/ML research and projects.
  • Lead, integrate and deploy research in AI/ML algorithms and infrastructure for sensitive data on HPC systems.
  • Lead and contribute to the design of technical solutions and new capabilities that execute on ORNL’s leading expertise in scalable analysis of sensitive data.
  • Author peer reviewed papers, technical papers, reports, and proposals.
  • Mentor students and early career staff. 


Basic Qualifications:

  • PhD in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Statistical and Data Sciences, or closely related field.
  • A minimum of 6 years of experience in applied computational and data science.
  • Experience working with sensitive datasets such as PHI or PII.
  • Experience designing technical solutions for infrastructure to support computationally demanding data analysis workflows.
  • High regard for teamwork and ethical principles in work and collaboration.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • 10++ years of experience beyond a PhD
  • Experience developing and deploying privacy enabling technologies such as Federated Learning, Homomorphic Encryption, Differential Privacy, or Secure Multi-party computation.
  • Demonstrated experience with software design for AI/ML using Python and associated libraries (Tensorflow, Pytorch, OpenCV, Dask, Numpy, Scipy)
  • Experience leveraging DOE LCF resources as a user.
  • Experience with diverse methods for computational and data analysis including HPC systems, Databases, Cloud technologies (e.g., Kubernetes)
