Overview: 

The Fusion Energy Division (FED) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) invites applicants for a Mechanical Engineer in the Remote Systems Group. Remote Systems specializes in the development of advanced remote processes, handling systems, and robotics for inaccessible environments in nuclear fission, fusion energy and particle accelerator applications. We seek individuals with advanced technical and analytical skills who are comfortable working across disciplines to contribute and lead in fast paced, team-oriented environment. Job Duties and Responsibilities: The successful candidate will perform research in the area of robotics and mechanical systems for remote and hazardous environment.  Research focuses on innovative designs that utilizes Finite Element Analysis (CFD, Thermal, and Stress)  and Design analysis.

 

  • Familiarity with developing control algorithms for actuating and controlling mechanical systems.
  • Analyze variety of engineering problems using traditional analytical methods and finite element analysis packages such as Mechanica, CosmosWorks Advance Professional, COMSOL, and ANSYS
  • Review proposal calls and develop research proposals either individually or in collaboration with other laboraroty researchers.
  • Publish technical papers in conferences and peer reviewed journals
  • Accurately and reliably communicate technical status and performance to ORNL management and project sponsors, both internal and external.
  • Prepare proposals, cost and schedule estimates.
  • Create engineering solid models using SolidWorks and Creo.
  • Accountable for compliance with environment, safety, health, and quality.

 

Ideal candidate qualifications:

  • Ability to lead a project/program independently
  • Ability to manage personnel (technicians/engineers/craft) to execute a project
  • Ability to effectively create and communicate project or design reviews for sponsors/program managers
  • Ability to write proposals and conduct independent research.  Ability to look at proposal calls and assemble teams to respond to the solicitation.
  • Experience in the design of remotely operated equipment for hazardous environments is a plus.

 

Basic Qualifications:

  • A PhD in Mechanical Engineering or other related engineering disciplines and 6+ years of releveant experience.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and skills needed to succeed in the development and application of engineering methods to solve real-world problems.
  • Must have a sound understanding of mechanics, design, and controls, with a working knowledge of fluid simulation softwares. 
  • Must be familiar in computer programming languages like C, Python and C++.
  • Must have experience in hardware system integration (LabView, Matlab, PLC programming, etc.) to control a mechanical system
  • Analyzing a variety of complex engineering problems using both traditional analytical methods and finite element analysis programs such as COMSOL, ANSYS, or CosmosWorks is a plus.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior experience working in the nuclear field, particularly in the design and development of systems for inaccessible remote environments. Experience in design, analysis, and optimization, of mechanical components are desired.
  • Ability to develop innovative proposals in response to solicitations is desired. 
  • Excellent communication skills including verbal, presentation, and writing skills are required to enable effective interaction with technical peers, program managers, and sponsors.
  • The ability to work individually or as part of a team and lead from knowledge and experience are essential.
