Description of job:  Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is seeking applicants for an Experimental Plasma Physicist to participate in power exhaust and particle control research in support of the U.S. DOE Fusion Energy Sciences (FES) Program in the Office of Science.


In this role you will report to the Power Exhuast and Particle Control Group Leader in the Burning Plasma Section of the Fusion Energy Division and will interface closely with scientists and engineers from both within ORNL as well as external collaborators.


Major Duties/Responsibilities

  • Provide leadership in ORNL’s power exhaust and particle control program elements, working closely with the worldwide fusion community on various confinement devices
  • Work to create partnerships with industry, universities, and national laboratories to identify and lead research proposals in the area of magnetic confinement device power exhaust and particle control in response to solicitations, identifying where ORNL experience and capabilities can make an impact.
  • Work closely with team members in the areas of plasma material interactions, diagnostics, and theory/modeling
  • Routinely communicate results of power exhaust and particle control analyses and experiments in high-impact presentations, reports, conference papers, and key peer-reviewed journals.
  • Oversee the design, fabrication and implementation of bolometry and other boundary plasma measurement tools on domestic and international fusion facilities
  • Provide scientific direction, guidance and mentorship to fellow scientists and staff as a key member of a power exhaust and particle control research team



  • Candidate requires a Doctorate in physics or nuclear engineering (or related field).
  • Candidate should have at least 12 years of post graduate experience in experimental research environments
  • Demonstrated success in at least some aspect of designing, building, and operating plasma diagnostics and measurement systems for fusion plasma devices
  • Excellent communication skills as evidenced by previous reports, papers, and presentations.
  • Demonstrated ability to work individually and/or as part of a team, including participation at remote facilities, and contribute based on knowledge and experience


        An ideal candidate will have one or more of the following qualifications:

  • Demonstrated techincal acumen in the physics of power and particle exhaust of fusion energy devices
  • Demonstrated at least one successful project in all aspects of designing, building, and operating plasma diagnostics and measurement systems for tokamaks and/or stellarators
  • Experience in one or more of the follow areas: bolometry, visible spectroscopy, infrared imaging, fiber optic temperature sensing and/or calorimetry
  • Demonstrated experience and success in providing scientific direction, guidance and mentorship within a multidisciplinary, fast-paced, team environment
  • Experience with scientific data management systems and/or control software for precision scientific equipment
