Requisition Id 4541

Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is seeking motivated individuals with experience in the analysis of fluid flow and heat transfer in nuclear systems to provide leadership and innovation in the development of novel radioisotope production targets and enhanced tools for analysis.

The position will reside within the Target Design, Analysis, and Qualification Group of the Radioisotope Science and Technology Division (RSTD), which is part of the Isotope Science and Engineering Directorate at ORNL. RSTD is a world leader in isotope production, and provides leadership in actinide science, delivers new innovations in isotope production technology, and advances the field of radiochemical processing methods to provide radioisotopes for science, medicine, industry, and security.

ORNL has nuclear, radiological, and scientific facilities and highly specialized equipment that serve as unique resources for radioisotope R&D. These resources include the High Flux Isotope Reactor (world’s highest neutron flux reactor;, the Radiochemical Engineering Development Center ( and other hot cell facilities which are used to produce an array of radioisotopes (e.g. Cf-252, Pu-238, Ni-63, Ac-227) for industrial and medical applications and scientific discovery (e.g., super-heavy elements).  These internationally renowned facilities, combined with ORNL’s high-caliber, professional, and highly engaged work force create a research environment with unmatched potential for impact and innovation.

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Work as part of a multi-disciplinary team to develop appropriate models and computational strategies to assess the experimental loading of the reactor, including assessment of thermomechanical properties
  • Contribute to the design of radioisotope production targets to optimize coolant flow and thermal performance
  • Produce safety basis calculations to rigorous quality standards documenting the performance of radioisotope production targets within HFIR and demonstrate compliance with the facility safety analysis report
  • Direct post-irradiation examination activities necessary to validate computational models
  • Develop capabilities for enhanced analysis of radioisotope production targets
  • Prepare peer-reviewed journal articles, reports, and presentations for sponsors and the technical community

Basic Qualifications:

  • This position requires a PhD in nuclear engineering, mechanical engineering, or a related field and a minimum of six years of relevant experience.
  • Record of excellence in research and development, as evident by publications, awards, and funded grants
  • Extensive knowledge of thermal and mechanical performance of materials in nuclear systems
  • Experience performing reactor transient and accident analysis
  • Experience with reactor system codes such as RELAP5, and CFD codes such as COMSOL or ANSYS

This position requires access to technology that is subject to export control requirements. Successful candidates must be qualified for such access without an export control license.
