Overview  

 

The Data and Machine Learning (DML) Group at Oak Ridge National Laboratory is seeking a highly motivated senior scientist to develop  techniques that harness the big data revolution relevant to  the scientific mission of the Laboratory and of the Department of Energy. In this role, you will be expected to lead and collaborate with scientists within the division as well as within Oak Ridge National Laboratory, on a variety of intra-disciplinary research projects.   

 

The DML Group consists of researchers focused on uncertainty quantification, reduced representation of data and simulation outcomes, approximation methods, large scale statistical computing, and  the development of algorithms and methodologies in artificial intelligence and machine learning. There is a special  emphasis on DOE mission-critical applications, high performance/large-scale computing and large-scale data processes and applications.   

 

This position is within the Mathematics in Computation Section in the Computer Science and Mathematics (CSM) Division.  The Mathematics in Computation Section creates the mathematics and algorithms that harness machines, ideas, and data, that enable far reaching scientific breakthroughs. CSM delivers fundamental and applied research capabilities in a wide range of areas, including applied mathematics and computer science, experimental computing systems, scalable algorithms and systems, artificial intelligence and machine learning, data management, workflow systems, analysis and visualization technologies, programming systems and environments, and system science and engineering. 

 

Major Duties/Responsibilities 

 

We are seeking a recognized leader in their area of technical expertise that will initiate, lead and perform independent R&D on an ongoing basis.    

 

Responsibilities for this position include working closely with the project team to create, evaluate, and publish novel research ideas, supervise and mentor students, contribute to the grant-writing and securing process, and collaborating with our partners and sponsors.

 

Research activities include, but are not limited to:  

 

  • Formulating research initiatives that push the frontiers of data driven approaches in the service of scientific inquiry  and engineering applications.
  • Publishing papers in high-quality refereed conferences and journals.  
  • Developing scalable, high performance software and computing tools.  
  • Actively collaborating with industry, academia, government labs, and applications developers in a variety of venues.  
  • Leading and contributing to research proposals and reporting to major funding agencies.   

  

Basic Qualifications  

 

  • Requires a PhD  in  Mathematics, Statistics,  Physics, Computer Science,  or Computational Sciences, and at least six years of relevant research experience, beyond the PhD.  
  • A well established track record of research in an area relevant to one or more areas of expertise of the group.  
  • Demonstrated experience in leading R&D projects. 

 

Preferred Qualifications 

   

  • Research relevant to  high performance computing, large scale data-informed methodologies and algorithms.  
  • Research in the applications of  graph-theoretic analysis, probabilistic approaches to complex systems, operations and decision research.

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.   
  • Effective interpersonal skills.
