Overview

 

 The Workflow Systems Group at Oak Ridge National Laboratory is seeking a highly motivated senior scientist to research and develop techniques for knowledge management and scientific workflow automation on the most powerful computer systems in the world. This position is part of the Data and AI Section within the Computer Science and Mathematics Division (CSM).


The Data and AI Section researches and develops methods to manage and gain knowledge from scientific data in support of DOE and ORNL missions. CSM delivers fundamental and applied research capabilities in a wide range of areas, including applied mathematics and computer science, experimental computing systems, scalable algorithms and systems, artificial intelligence and machine learning, data management, workflow systems, analysis and visualization technologies, programming systems and environments, and system science and engineering.

As a senior research staff member, you will have the opportunity to help solve some of the most challenging problems this country faces. You will lead and perform groundbreaking research on a wide range of significant problems with the fastest computing platforms in the world. This position requires novel thinking, teamwork, and discovery in finding new approaches for analyzing massive and complex data, collaborating with worldwide experts, and publishing groundbreaking results.

 

Major Duties and Responsibilities

 

 Responsibilities for this position include working closely with the project teams to research, design, and maintain database and workflow software on edge and high-end computing systems. These activities include, but are not limited to:

  • Lead and conduct research in methods that enable insight from scientific data using scientific workflow automation.
  • Lead and conduct research in methods that enable insight from scientific data using knowledge management/database technologies.
  • Publish and present research results in journals and conferences.
  • Joint work with other members of the Workflow group and collaborating partners at other government laboratories, universities, and industry.  
  • Active collaboration with project affiliates in industry, academia, and government labs.
  • Be part of a vibrant collaborative research environment which will provide the opportunity to perform cutting-edge research in high-performance computing, using ORNL’s Leadership Class Scientific Facilities such as OLCF, SNS, and CNMS.
  • Maintain membership in professional, academic, and research organizations.
  • Supervise and mentor students.
  • Participate in proposal development for potential external and internal funding.
     

Basic Qualifications

 

  • Ph.D. in computer science, computational science, or a related field
  • 6+ years of relevant research experience outside of Ph.D.
  • 6+ years of experience using modern programming languages and experience contributing to software projects.

 
Preferred Qualifications

 

  • Excellent interpersonal skills, oral and written communication skills, and strong personal motivation.
  • Experience with workflow management systems
  • Experience with database technologies
  • Experience with parallel and distributed computing
