<span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">The National Center for Computational Sciences Division (NCCS) at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) operates the world’s fastest high performance computing system, largest parallel file system, and will deploy an Exascale system in 2021.  New discovery science and enhanced instruments are driving the science community towards enabling physics-informed artificial intelligence (AI) as well as AI-informed hypotheses for physics models.  These systems generate enormous volumes of data during scientific campaigns which, when properly analyzed, can offer new insights for the scientific objectives as well as the facility’s operations.

 

<span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">The Analytics and AI methods at Scale (AAIMS) group within the NCCS is seeking driven senior and distinguished research scientists in the areas of intersection of High-Performance Computing (HPC) and AI, including data workflows processing, machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL) at scale. Specific areas of research interest include:

  • <span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">Domain-science-informed data science and AI including physical sciences broadly, observational science, applied methods in engineering (manufacturing and related areas), carbon cycle and energy production and delivery, computational genomics, and healthcare informatics.
  • <span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">Data analytics pipelines from the Edge to Exascale.
  • <span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">Computational performance of AI/ML algorithms, including the ability to use modern computing hardware and software frameworks efficiently.
  • <span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">Operational data analytics to enable data-driven intelligence and facility innovation.
  • <span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">Visualization of large-scale HPC/AI discovery campaigns.

 

 

<span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">Major Duties and Responsibilities

  • <span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">Lead and collaborate with internal and external researchers on a variety of extreme-scale AI/ML research and projects.
  • <span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">Integrate and deploy research in AI/ML workflows and algorithms on high performance computing systems.
  • <span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">Lead the delivery of toolkits and new capabilities that execute on ORNL’s leading compute and data infrastructures.
  • <span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">Lead in authoring peer reviewed papers, technical papers, reports, and proposals.
  • <span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">Advance personal and staff contributions in leading professional, academic, and research organizations.
  • <span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">Develop and coordinate division activities in HPC-AI with cross-cutting initiatives in the laboratory by establishing forward-looking centers of excellence.

 

 

<span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">Basic Qualifications

 

  • <span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">Ph.D. in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Physical or Applied Sciences, or a field closely related to the job duties of this position.
  • <span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">A minimum of 6 years of relevant research experience outside of Ph.D.
  • <span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">Experience leading major projects in laboratory or academic settings.
  • <span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">Strong publication record and record of developing high-impact capabilities and tools.

 

<span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">Preferred Requirements

  • <span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">12+ years of relevant research experience outside of degree
