The Information Technology Services Division in the Business Services Directorate at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory is seeking qualified applicants for a Senior Solutions Engineer (SE) position for the DevOps team in the Research and Development Systems Engineering group. The R&D Systems Engineering group exists to facilitate lab goals through systems engineering, integration, and support for the research community at ORNL. We run mid-range clusters, servers, workstations, and other services where science happens at the lab.


The Senior SE is responsible for facilitating DevOps activities for R&D projects. This position will act as a mentor, coach, and influencer across the team and drive a culture of agile development practices and technological growth for both on-premises and cloud platforms. They must think broadly on how solutions can be developed, scaled, and delivered to streamline and optimized one or more areas in the organization. This position will work with a team to provide deployment, automation, monitoring, and management tool infrastructure for researchers. The SE will need to be a collaborative and energetic team member who thrives on the opportunity to build trust and credibility and ultimately become a trusted advisor. The Senior SE will participate in project Scrums and work with researchers to provide automation solutions.


Major Duties/Responsibilities

Primary duties include:


- Architect, build and maintain on premise and/or cloud infrastructure to support team and research customer initiatives

- Design for the availability, performance, scalability, and security of production systems

- Responsible for guiding a team of engineers on development and maintenance of technology solutions including architecting and implementing solutions requiring integration of multiple platforms and applications across the enterprise

- Work and communicate effectively with business and technical subject matter experts, other developers, third party vendors and IT management

- Provide guidance and expertise on system troubleshooting and problem solving across multiple platforms and environments

- Excellent influencing and reasoning skills

- Embrace continuous integration and continuous delivery (CI/CD) processes

- Evaluate new technology options and vendor products

- Build and foster relationships with internal and/or external stakeholders

- Identify and document IT best practices that will improve the systems deployment function

- Present and communicate DevOps methodologies and the transformational activities therein to internal research teams

- Work with research teams to design workflows for hybrid and cloud-based workloads

- Migrate workloads from internal servers and VMs to AWS

- Ensure the secure and effective operation of computing systems through compliance with ORNL procedures and IT Internal Operating Procedures.

- Off hours support may be required.


Basic Requirements

- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related technical subjects or equivalent combination of education and experience.

- A minimum of 8 years of experience managing UNIX/Linux Systems.

- A minimum of 3 years of experience managing container infrastructure and orchestration

- A minimum of 2 years utilizing CI/CD technologies


Preferred Qualifications


- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related technical subjects or equivalent combination of education and experience with 10 years of experience managing UNIX/Linux Systems.

- Experience managing virtual infrastructure across on-premise and cloud resources to maximize performance and ROI

- Experience with configuring and managing docker swarms/Kubernetes clusters.

- Strong knowledge of multiple operating systems.

- Knowledge of networking fundamentals including TCP/IP, traffic analysis, common protocols, and network diagnostics.

- Experience with performance and diagnostic tools for benchmarking, analysis and tuning of systems, networking, and storage.

- Experience with network and device monitoring systems.

- Previous experience working in a government, scientific, or other highly technical environment.

- Excellent interpersonal skills suitable for user support and ability to work well with peer system administrators.

- Demonstrated ability to balance complex research and security requirements.

- RHSA, VCP, AWS Certified DevOps Engineer

- Fluency in at least one scripting language such as Bash, Python, or equivalent
