Overview: 

The Nuclear Energy and Fuel Cycle Division (NEFCD) performs a wide range of scientific, technical, and programmatic activities in all facets of the nuclear enterprise.  These activities encompass nonproliferation research and research and development (R&D) pertaining to nuclear materials processing.  NEFCD has responsibility for much of the nuclear chemical processing and radiochemistry that is performed at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).  In particular, the Uranium Process Chemistry (UPC) Group applies chemistry, chemical engineering, and nuclear engineering fundamentals to understanding gas and effluent processes associated with the nuclear fuel cycle in support of nuclear nonproliferation, safeguards and security, and national security.  We are seeking an established team member with a proven track record for developing successful proposals, peer reviewed papers, and/or patents.

 

Major Duties/Responsibilities: 

  • Collaborate within a multidisciplinary, multi-laboratory environment developing and demonstrating applied technology to solving technical problems
  • Perform and guide work with radioactive, toxic, and corrosive materials within the DOE safety culture.
  • Participate in and lead large complex nuclear safety analyses focusing on nuclear safeguards and nuclear nonproliferation aspects of gas and effluent processes within the nuclear fuel cycle
  • Represent work performed by the group for internal and external review, providing presentations to sponsors and the public as necessary
  • Contribute to technical papers, journal articles, reports, and proposals for internal and external release, and represent the organization and sponsors via technical presentations in workshops and conferences
  • Communicate regularly with internal and external collaborators
  • Demonstrate results-oriented behavior, be able to work independently and in a team environment, thoroughly document work performed, and communicate work performed to peers and project sponsors

 

Basic Qualifications:

  • PhD in Chemical, Nuclear, or Environmental Engineering, Chemistry, Physics, Geology, Oceanography, or related discipline
  • >8 years related experience

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with radioactive materials and a DOE safety culture
  • Experience working in a multidisciplinary team environment
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs
  • Excellent interpersonal, presentation, and writing skills to enable effective interaction and communication with technical peers, program managers, and sponsors
  • Organized, detail-oriented, self-starter, and sensitized to a nuclear safety culture

 

This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program.
