Overview:    

The Neutron Technologies Division (NTD) is seeking a Senior Structural Engineer to fill a role located in the Facility Management and Engineering Group within the Site Services Section. NTD is one of four divisions within the Neutron Sciences Directorate at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).    

 

The Site Services Section provides facilities management, project management, engineering services, facilities maintenance, and construction across ORNL’s Chestnut Ridge locations. 

 

The Facility Management and Engineering Group produces a broad portfolio of work products for various customers in the Neutron Sciences Directorate including conventional facilities and experimental equipment, construction oversight for related projects, and facility maintenance. Possible services include civil engineering for roads and grounds, structural design for modifications, review of Architect/Engineering (A/E) designs for new facilities, analysis of floor loading for new experimental equipment, concrete design and shielding for neutron instruments. 

 

Major Duties/Responsibilities:   

  • Lead structural engineering activities related to building modifications, neutron science instrument shielding, concrete design, utility and process equipment support fixtures, platforms, walk-ways, stairs, fixed ladders, floor load checks, crane and hoist support systems, etc.  

  • Prepare and approve detailed engineering reports, studies, calculations, and internal drawings to ensure quality and compliance. 

  • Conduct advanced structural analyses, including seismic qualifications, and provide expert recommendations. 

  • Inspect structures, systems, and components (SSCs) through facility walk-downs, addressing damage or defects with engineered solutions. 

  • Mentor drafting personnel and guide the creation of design drawings that meet project requirements and standards. 

  • Define design criteria, develop technical specifications, and review / approve submittals from outside architect/engineer services. 

  • Lead engineering studies to scope future projects and prepare detailed estimates for management. 

  • Provide expert field support and inspections for installation and maintenance activities. 

  • Develop technical design documents including drawings, specifications, and cost estimates for new construction, facility modifications and improvements. 

  • Provide sketches and drawings in CAD, using AutoCAD or Revit. 

  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to ensure constructability, operability, and integration of systems. 

  • Review designs produced by subcontractor A/E firms, including equipment selection. 

  • Oversee installations to ensure they meet design criteria, codes, and standards. 

  • Follow environment, safety, health, and quality program requirements.

Basic Qualifications: 

  • BS degree in structural engineering (or civil with concentration in structures, or related engineering field) under an ABET accredited engineering curriculum. 

  • A minimum of 8 years of proven structural engineering experience. 

  • Knowledgeable and proficient in material designs such as structural steel, stainless steel, concrete, and masonry. 

 

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • An MS degree in structural or civil engineering. 

  • Registered Professional Engineer (PE) in state of Tennessee. 

  • Working knowledge of the IBC/IEBC and their suite of referenced codes and standards. 

  • Working knowledge of structural finite element modeling programs (STADD, GT STRUDL, etc.) 

  • Familiar with the following DOE order and standards: 

  • DOE O 420.1C – Facility Safety 

  • DOE-STD-1020 – Natural Phenomena Hazards Analysis and Design Criteria for DOE Facilities 

  • DOE-STD-1073 – Configuration Management 

  • DOE-STD-1189 – Integration of Safety into the Design Process 

  • Familiarity with working at a DOE national laboratory. 

  • Experience with Autodesk Design Software (AutoCAD, Revit, BIM) or equivalent. 

  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Tools (e.g., Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint) and Adobe Acrobat. 

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills. 

  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory. 

  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to constantly evolving needs.
