Overview: 

The Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is seeking qualified applicants for a Staff Technician who will focus on mechanical design and build of prototype systems and electronics assembly and testing. This work will be performed as part of a multi-disciplinary team focused on the development of novel electronics and sensors systems. This position resides in the Sensors and Electronics Group under the Electrification and Energy Infrastructure Division at ORNL.

 

Major Duties/Responsibilities: 

  • Build prototype parts using machine shop equipment and materials.
  • Assemble mechanical and electrical systems, including component-level builds using soldering equipment.
  • Test, troubleshoot and maintain electronics hardware using diagnostic equipment such as meters, oscilloscopes, and logic analyzers.
  • Design and procure enclosures for electronic systems that meet electrical, thermal and safety requirements.
  • Collaborate with group members and scientific staff in the successful operation of currently installed and newly developed mechanical and electrical systems.
  • Maintain laboratory spaces including equipment maintenance, cleanliness, and availability of stock items.
  • Commit to the implementation and perpetuation of laboratory values and ethics.
  • Ensure and monitor compliance with environment, safety, health, and quality program requirements.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Associate’s degree in a technical field with a minimum of five years of experience.
  • Experience with machine shop equipment, including mills, lathes, bandsaws, and CNC machines.
  • Competency with document creation, spreadsheets, and CNC software.
  • Proficiency in maintaining laboratory spaces, organizing components and ordering parts.
  • Skill in electronics assembly including SMD/SMT soldering.
  • Demonstrated success in working with a multi-disciplinary team in a dynamic environment.
  • Background in mechanical and electrical testing in a research or industrial environment.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Associate’s degree in mechanical or electrical engineering with a minimum of seven years of experience.
  • Experience with product development of embedded electronic systems and sensors.
  • Familiarity with computer aided modeling and manufacturing tools, especially SolidWorks, for creating and evaluating prototype designs.
  • Ability to work and communicate effectively with teams of scientists, engineers, and technicians both internal and external to the laboratory.
  • Aptitude to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to frequent and ever-changing needs
     

Special Requirements:

  • Must be able to perform tasks that involve physical requirements, including, but not limited to lifting/carrying and pushing/pulling objects, and as such a post-offer, pre-employment physical exam is required.
  • Familiar with the appropriate use of personal protective equipment, including eye protection, earmuffs, hard hats, and gloves.
  • Be able to work in varied working conditions, including noise over 80dB, vibration, mechanical and thermal hazards, moving objects, operate vehicle on company property and/or highway, working with people, working alone, and working with solvents, fumes, dusts, and gases.
