Overview:

The National Center for Computational Sciences (NCCS) at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is seeking a software engineer to help developing AI & ML powered information systems for the Oak Ridge Leadership Computing Facility.  Towards the vision of smart facility and data-driven operational intelligence, the candidate will help develop innovative software services and applications that can provide near-real time interactive insights & control from vast amounts of live operational data streamed from state-of-the-art leadership class computing systems. 

NCCS hosts the Oak Ridge Leadership Computing Facility, one of DOE’s National User Facilities. Among other systems, we operate Summit - one of the world’s fastest high-performance computing systems and will host the world’s first exa-scale system for science in 2022.  We are a leader in computational and computer science, with signature strengths in high-performance computing and data analytics with applications in a wide variety of science domains. NCCS provides state-of-the-art computational and data science infrastructure coupled with dedicated technical and scientific professionals tackling large-scale problems across a broad range of scientific domains for accelerating scientific discovery and engineering advances.

This position resides in the Analytics and AI Methods at Scale (AAIMS) group in the Advanced Technologies Section (ATS), National Center for Computational Sciences Division (NCCS), Computing and Computational Sciences Directorate (CCSD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).  The AAIMS group develops and deploys emerging large-scale data science and AI methods for scientific user programs and enables facility innovation through operational data analytics.

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

NCCS collects operational data from various sources such as the HPC facility, storage backends, networks, parallel file systems, and applications and jobs at very high velocity and volume.  Prospective candidates are expected to leverage their expertise in software engineering to help build an AI and machine learning driven information system that aims to enhance situational awareness & efficiency of our users and operations.  Working in a diverse team of researchers and engineers from backgrounds in data science, software engineering and system software, candidates will contribute by architecting, developing, deploying, and maintaining the services and applications that leverages the machine learning models, visual analytics & data artifacts the team produces from the live data.

Major related areas of activities are listed below but are not limited to:

  • Design and develop scalable data pipeline components that perform data acquisition, processing, and handling.
  • Conduct scalable data processing, analytics, and operational insight extraction.
  • Design, implement, or support web based interactive visual analytics applications that leverages the data artifacts from the underlying data pipelines & machine learning development activities from live data.
  • Operation & maintenance of an eco-system of data pipeline, workflow components, services, and applications in production.

 

Basic Qualifications:

  • B.S. degree in computer science, or related technical subjects or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • 5+ years of software engineering experience and proficiency of using one or more computer languages and eco-systems including Python, Go/Rust, Javascript (e.g., ReactJS) on a Linux based environment

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s or Ph.D. preferred
  • End-to-end experience in delivering & maintaining software products & services to end users or opensource communities
  • Familiarity in industry software engineering practices that touches test driven development, continuous integration & delivery (deployment), and site reliability engineering
  • Working experience using Kubernetes, container management & orchestration
  • Data engineering experience and knowledge leveraging various frameworks, systems, and tools to handle large datasets in motion
  • Experience in developing web applications, web services API, and/or web-based interactive visual analytics applications
  • Solid understanding of full web technology stack (e.g., HTTPS, RESTful services, client-side frameworks, data persistency technologies)
  • Knowledge in distributed computing and database topics targeting high-availability, scalability & correctness
  • Familiarity in interacting with HPC systems
