Overview:

Oak Ridge National Laboratory seeks a software engineer to deliver solutions that contribute to a wide range of scientific research and national security missions. This position will reside within the Data Engineering Group in the Computing and Computational Sciences Directorate. Our group creates and operates innovative systems for the collection, management, distribution, curation and visualization of data. In this role you will be involved in the design, development and operation of complex solutions needed to meet the program sponsor’s requirements.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Contribute to requirements definition, design, and development of applications providing solutions to sponsor needs.
  • Conduct applied research into new and emerging technologies and tools to identify opportunities for integration, application, and innovation.
  • Assist in deploying releases to development, test and production environments.
  • Collaborate with team members to support production applications.
  • Provide technical assistance to other staff and customers as necessary

 

Basic Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related field and 5+ years of related experience.
  • Experience with 2 or more languages including Java, JavaScript Frameworks (like Angular and React), C++, Python, SQL and Oracle PL/SQL.
  • Experience building web applications and their supporting background data services using modern technologies.
  • Experience with any of the following database systems/types: relational (PostgresSQL, Oracle, MySQL), document (AWS DocumentDB, MongoDB, etc.), spatial, graph, and other unstructured databases.

 

Special Requirement:

This position requires the ability to obtain a DOE L or Q clearance. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with agile software development methodologies.
  • Experience with version control systems like Git.
  • Experience with automated deployment and testing environments.
  • Experience with gaming engines like Unreal or Unity is a plus.
  • Experience with scientific data and data formats is a plus.
  • Experience with artificial intelligence and machine learning is a plus.
  • Experience with High Performance Computing environments is a plus.
  • Experience developing desktop applications for Windows, MacOS and Linux is a plus.
  • Excellent communication and writing skills.
  • Commitment to continuous learning to serve in an ever-changing computing landscape.
