Position Details

The Cybersecurity Research Group in the Cyber and Data Analytics Division at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) seeks candidates for a research staff position in formal and rigorous methods in computer science, program analysis, and computer security, especially pertaining to the static analysis of both hardware and software.


Major Duties and Responsibilities


  • Participate in new and ongoing research in applying formal and rigorous methods to static analysis of software and hardware
  • Formulate novel solutions to problems of national interest and plan and execute the research and development necessary for the practical implementation of those solutions
  • Lead and take part in multiple R&D projects
  • Effectively interpret, report, and present research concepts and results to national audiences at all levels
  • Work with customers independently or in teams to develop requirements and proposals, conduct research, and produce working prototypes for demonstration
  • Write peer-reviewed papers, technical reports, and proposals for internal and external release
  • Mentor early career research staff, postdocs, and students.




Basic Requirements

  • A Ph.D. in computer science, electrical engineering, mathematics, computer engineering, or a directly related field
  • 10+ years of experience in the application of formal and rigorous methods for cyber security


Preferred Qualifications

  • Understanding of correctness proofs and programming language semantics, especially the mechanization of reasoning about program semantics
  • Strong mathematics background
  • Independent research competence as demonstrated by a significant number of national and/or international peer-reviewed publications and a sustained publication record
  • Successful supervision of junior research staff and demonstrated success in research project management


Special Requirement:

This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a clearance from the Department of Energy, which requires US Citizenship.As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse program (WSAP) testing designed position which requires passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program in which employees are subject to being randomly selected for testing. The occupant of this position will also be subject to an ongoing requirement to report to ORNL any drug-related arrest or conviction or receipt of a positive drug test result.

Senior R&D Staff Member, Band 4
