Overview: 

The Testing Science and Cascade Engineering Section within the Enrichment Science and Engineering Division (ESED) is seeking a Technical Professional - Sr. EI&C Engineer for the Electrical, Instrumentation, and Controls Engineering Group. 

In this group, we are focused on the development of testbeds and enrichment systems by human machine interface research and system logic development and this position will have with an emphasis in the areas of instrumentation hardware and software to make a significant contribution to projects involving isotope enrichment, nuclear nonproliferation, and instrumentation of mission-critical systems.

We develop and implement advanced control system architectures for enrichment technology test beds.

 

Major Duties and Responsibilities

  • The Sr. EI&C Engineer is responsible for design and deployment of measurement and instrumentation systems for a wide variety of projects
  • Applies best practices in interfacing sensors to signal conditioning, data collection, and control systems
  • Reports to and works closely with the Electrical, Instrumentation, and Controls Engineering Group Leader to implement the group’s scientific vision
  • Mentors group members to enable career advancement
  • Establishes capabilities that enable programs to excel at the forefront of science and technology
  • Performs R&D to advance the field of knowledge and/or technology in one’s respective specialty; shepherds, implements, and models standards for performance of work consistent with Environment, Safety, Security, Health, and Quality (ESH&Q) requirements and business rules
  • Effectively interacts with various personnel and sponsors, both within and outside of ORNL. Functions as a technical leader in a team environment
  • Works collaboratively with co-workers and management as well as independently, to fully document work performed in the forms of technical reports and presentations, and to participate in the development of research proposal
  • Interfaces with principal investigators, management, engineers, fabricators, modelers and test campaign personnel
  • Ensures compliance with Environment, Safety and Health (ES&H) and QA requirements

Basic Qualifications

  • Requires a M.S. with a minimum of 7 years experience, or a B.S. with 8 years experience in Electrical Engineering or related field of study.
  • Electrical sensor interfacing and signal conditioning
  • Ability to develop, document, and communicate measurement and control system designs including P&ID diagrams
  • Experience with programmable logic controllers
  • Electronic system design and development
  • Strong proficiency in at least one text-based programming language such as C++, Python, or Java
  • Experience with object-oriented programing
  • Ability to learn new software (with web-based training if necessary)
  • Electronics laboratory skills (soldering, wiring, instruments, etc.)
  • Ability to assist with assembly of prototype and/or production devices
  • The ability to clearly communicate, both verbally and in writing, to sponsoring agencies, other engineers and researchers, technicians, and craftsmen
  • The successful candidate must also have the ability to work with minimal supervision and will be expected to provide input and influence project direction through interaction with project team leadership.
  • Ability to hold and maintain a DOE Q security clearance is required
  • The ability to work flexible hours and travel when required.
  • Proven ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Active DOE Q clearance
  • Certified LabVIEW Developer/Architect
  • Programmable logic controllers (PLCs): PLC vendors (e.g. Allen-Bradley and Siemens) and PLC HMI tools (e.g. FactoryTalk View Site Edition and WinCC)
  • Variable speed motor drives (VSDs)
  • Analog design
  • User interface design
  • Equipment layout and packaging
  • MATLAB programming
  • Data analysis methods
  • Experience with an industry standard SCADA

 

 

Special Requirements: This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program.
