The Target Engineering group of the SNS Neutron Technologies Engineering (NTE) Section of the Neutron Technologies Division (NTD) is responsible for designing, developing, and supporting the SNS target system and several of its auxiliary systems. These systems include a mega-watt class mercury loop and remote handling systems.  The engineering analyst's primary role is to support these systems and members of the group by performing and guiding technical analysis and experiments related to these systems.  This position requires both personal technical skills as well as leadership and project organizational skills.


Major Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Analyzes existing and new target related systems using engineering tools including CFD. Where existing tools and methods are insufficient, leads a team to develop the needed tools and methods. Where existing knowledge is insufficient, creates and carries out plans for the development and research required to deliver the missing knowledge or tools.
  • Deliver excellent analyses and experimental reports. Work is guided by group goals, policies, and strategies. Advises management in the development of these guides.
  • Work independently to perform complex technical work, including analysis and experiments.
  • Lead matrixed teams to complete complex development projects.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with collaborators and stakeholders across NScD, in other directorates, and outside ORNL.
  • Work to implement state of the art methods and approaches in the organization and shares expertise and new developments through mentoring and training.
  • Deliver high-quality papers, presentations, and reports. Shares results of analyses and experiments to support industry and further R&D.
  • Work with other disciplines and researchers to develop plans and funding proposals to transform discoveries and approaches into working production-grade systems.
  • Maintain a strong commitment to the implementation and perpetuation of ORNL values and ethics
  • Comply with ORNL environment, safety, health, and quality program requirements


Basic Qualifications:

  • MS in mechanical engineering or a related field
  • A minimum of 10 years of relevant experience in analysis and/or research and development
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and hands-on experience with fluids analysis and experiments
  • Ability and enthusiasm to work as part of a highly collaborative, dynamic, and diverse team
  • Excellent problem solving and communication skills


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ph.D in mechanical engineering or a related field, which can reduce the number of required years of experience
  • Experience with Ansys Fluent and/or CFX
  • Experience with multiphase flow and fluid-structure interation modelling
  • Experience with cavitation erosion
  • HPC experience
  • Experience in writing funding proposals is a plus
