The Multifunctional Equipment Integration Group in the Building and Transportation Science Division (BTSD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is seeking qualified candidates to fill a Research and Development Staff position. The work in this group supports the U.S. DOE Building Technology Office and other customers by developing state-of-the-art building equipment for energy efficiency, equipment-to-grid integration, and improved life cycle climate performance.

Major Duties / Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be responsible for conducting, coordinating, and reporting complex research related to mass and energy conversion systems including: (1) carbon capture, storage and utilization technologies, (2) advanced separation and moisture management systems, (3) process optimization and integration and, (4) natural gas driven building equipment. This will involve the synthesis and characterization of materials for CO2 capture from air and flu gases, evaluation of various regeneration approaches and integration to various system configurations and techno-economic assessment of processes. The successful candidate will develop novel designs for mass exchangers, conduct experimental campaigns, perform thermodynamic analysis and system modeling, analyze results, prepare technical documents and research publications, and secure new funding. The work will involve interacting and collaborating with researchers from universities, national laboratories, and private industry.

The successful candidate must have a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science/Engineering, or a related field.  Research and development experience (including postdoctoral, other academic, research fellow, and/or industry) is preferred, especially in the field of direct air capture or point source capture. The candidate should possess a strong background (or other direct experience) in mass and energy conversion systems (such as system design, analytical modeling, numerical modeling, experimental design, instrumentation and data acquisition).

Expertise in any of the following areas is of particular interest: (a) carbon capture, storage and utilization technologies, (b) heat and mass exchanger design and related disciplines (heat transfer, fluid flow, and coupled heat and mass transfer), (c) membranes, (d) gas-liquid or gas-solid sorption processes, (e) regeneration systems and integration of waste heat resources, (f) process modeling and control systems, combined heat and power generation (CHP) technologies. Experience with building equipment such as electric or gas fired air and water heaters, dehumidification systems is a plus. Familiarity with system integration platforms is also preferred.

The candidate should have the ability to lead teams of engineers and technicians to successfully design, build and evaluate advanced building equipment and energy conversion systems.  Excellent communication skills (oral and written), as well as strong interpersonal skills to support team building, partnering, and leadership are required.
