Purpose

The Multifunctional Equipment Integration Group in the Building and Transportation Science Division (BTSD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is seeking qualified candidates to fill a Research and Development Staff position. The work in this group supports the U.S. DOE Building Technology Office and other customers by developing state-of-the-art building equipment for energy efficiency, equipment-to-grid integration, and improved life cycle climate performance.

 

Major Duties / Responsibilities

You will be responsible for conducting, coordinating, and reporting complex research assignments related to grid-interactive building equipment and appliances for residential and commercial sectors, including but not limited to split and packaged air conditioning systems (heating, cooling and dehumidification); residential and commercial water heaters; industrial and commercial refrigeration systems; combined heating and power (CHP) at various scales; energy storage systems, integration approaches and process controls.  You will be involved in developing experimental setups, conducting experimental campaigns, performing analyses and system modeling, analyzing results, and preparing technical documents and research publications. The work will involve interacting and collaborating with researchers from universities, national laboratories, and private industry.

 

Qualifications

You must have a Ph.D. or an MS in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or a related field, with at least 5 years (after acquiring a Ph.D.) or 10 years (after acquiring an M.S.) of experience. You should possess the necessary background and experience in grid-interactive building equipment and appliances for residential and commercial applications.  Strong fundamental knowledge in areas such as thermodynamics, heat transfer, energy conversion, combustion and thermal processes is desired.  A background and experience with integration and control for building equipment enabled by energy storage systems is also a plus.  Your ability to lead teams of engineers and technicians to successfully design, build and evaluate advanced building equipment is key.  Excellent communication skills (oral and written), as well as strong interpersonal skills to support team building, partnering, and leadership are required.  The ability to develop and/or maintain strong relationships through active participation in building industry organizations and events is required.  Finally, the successful candidate should have strong, proven publication/patent record.
