Overview:  

The Stable Isotope’s Dispensing and Technical Services Group is seeking a Stable Isotope Processing Development Technician who will focus on supporting research associated with the post-enrichment processing of stable isotopes spanning nearly every element of the periodic table.  This position is part of the Enrichment Science and Engineering Division and serves the nation by advancing enrichment technologies and providing enriched stable isotopes products.  We lead the R&D and production process development for delivering stable isotopes for medical, industrial, and DOE mission critical applications. As part of our research and processing team, you will work closely with a focused group of scientists, engineers, and technicians on challenging, fast-paced technical projects and operations in support of the DOE Isotope Program, and specifically associated with the rapidly growing field of stable isotope enrichment.

 

Major Duties/Responsibilities: 

  • Develop new methods of materials processing unique to extremely high-value isotopic material including casting, rolling, vapor deposition, thermal processes, milling, and powder processing in support of senior technical staff
  • Start-up new lab equipment including building, commissioning, operations, and maintenance
  • Perform fabrication and conversions of stable isotopes
  • Prepare reports, presentations, and operator aids or guidelines on technical services/fabrication activities
  • Collaborate with scientists, engineers, and technicians
  • Ensure compliance with environment, safety, health and quality program requirements
  • Demonstrate dedication to strong teaming and a positive culture within the organization

 

 Basic Qualifications:

  • B.S. degree in Chemical, Metallurgical, Mechanical, or Materials Engineering or a related technical discipline with a minimum of 2-4 years of technical experience in a lab environment or an Associates degree in Chemical, Metallurgical, Mechanical, or Materials Engineering Technology or a related technical discipline with a minimum of 7 years of technical experience in a lab environment. A comparable combination of education and experience will be considered.  Relevant laboratory research experience while obtaining a degree can be considered. 
  • Hands-on experience in small-scale metals fabrication techniques
  • Excellent attention to detail will be required when working with exotic and expensive materials including meticulous handling, physical dexterity, and documentation
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the Laboratory
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs
  • Ability to solve basic research problems
  • This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program.
     

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with lab equipment start-up and maintenance
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Experience in inorganic and/or analytical chemistry
  • Knowledge in metallurgy
  • Knowledge in powder metallurgy
  • Ability to obtain and maintain an SCI clearance

 

Physical Requirements: Work involves various physical requirements and working conditions. As such, a pre-hire physical will be required after offer.
