Stable Isotope Processing Technical Professional

Date: May 6, 2022

Location: Oak Ridge, TN, US, 37830

Company: Oak Ridge National Laboratory

Requisition Id 7993

Oak Ridge National Laboratory is the largest US Department of Energy science and energy laboratory, conducting basic and applied research to deliver transformative solutions to compelling problems in energy and security.

We are seeking a Stable Isotope Processing Technical Professional who will focus on supporting research and operations associated with the post-enrichment processing of stable isotopes spanning nearly every element of the periodic table.  The group transforms stable isotopic material into products used by science and industry for cutting edge research and live-saving technologies. This position will be a member of the Stable Isotope Materials and Chemistry group, which is in the Enrichment Science and Engineering Division (ESED) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).   We lead the R&D and production process development for delivering stable isotopes for medical, industrial, and DOE mission critical applications.

The Enrichment Science and Engineering Division serves the nation in two critical areas: advancing enrichment technologies and exploring stable isotope production and applications. The division leverages an elite staff of scientists, engineers, and technicians with the world-leading capabilities of Oak Ridge National Laboratory to deliver groundbreaking advancements with a variety of applications, from national security to life-saving medical treatments.

ESED is the national steward for the research, development, and demonstration of enrichment technologies.  ORNL is a recognized leader in centrifuge and electromagnetic enrichment technology.  We are the stewards and dispensary of the nation’s stable isotope inventory and have a legacy dating to the late 1940s.  This division integrates the full enrichment process from chemical synthesis of feed materials through fabrication of the custom physical forms needed to support the user communities.

You will work closely with a focused group of scientists, technicians, and engineers on challenging, fast paced technical projects in support of the DOE Isotope Program.   This has been a quickly expanding program at ORNL and offers significant opportunities for professional growth. The team demonstrates a collective excitement for the important work being accomplished and values creative solutions to developing technology and processes to solve the latest challenges. Successful development and deployment of isotope processing and fabrication requires an acute attention to detail and continued consideration of personnel and equipment safety.

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Develop and execute new methods of materials processing unique to extremely high-value isotopic material including casting, rolling, vapor deposition, thermal processes, milling, and powder processing in support of senior technical staff
  • Broad lab equipment usage including building, commissioning, process development, operations, and maintenance
  • Perform fabrication and conversions of stable isotopes
  • Prepare reports, presentations, and operator aids or guidelines on technical services/fabrication activities
  • Collaborate with scientists, engineers, and technicians
  • Ensure compliance with environment, safety, health, and quality program requirements
  • Demonstrate dedication to strong teaming and a positive culture within the organization

 Basic Qualifications:

  • A B.S. degree in Chemical, Metallurgical, Mechanical, or Materials Engineering or a related technical discipline with a minimum of 2-4 years of technical experience in a lab environment.  A comparable combination of education and experience will be considered.  Relevant laboratory research experience while obtaining a degree can be considered.
  • Hands-on experience in small-scale metals fabrication techniques
  • Excellent attention to detail will be required when working with exotic and expensive materials including meticulous handling, physical dexterity, and documentation
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the Laboratory
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs
  • Ability to solve basic research problems
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with lab equipment operation, start-up, and maintenance
  • Experience with metals fabrication including casting, rolling, vapor deposition, thermal processes, and milling
  • Experience with vacuum systems operation and maintenance including vacuum furnaces
