Overview:  

The Stable Isotope’s Dispensing and Technical Services Group is seeking a Stable Isotope Research Chemist who will focus on R&D associated with the post-enrichment recovery and conversion of stable isotopes spanning nearly every element on  the periodic table. 

This position is part of the Enrichment Science and Engineering Division and serves the nation by advancing enrichment technologies and providing enriched stable isotopes products.  We lead the R&D and production process development for delivering stable isotopes for medical, industrial, and DOE mission critical applications. As part of our research and processing team, you will work closely with a focused group of scientists, engineers, and technicians on challenging, fast-paced technical projects and operations in support of the DOE Isotope Program, and specifically associated with the rapidly growing field of stable isotope enrichment.

Major Duties/Responsibilities: 

  • Develop new stable isotope recovery techniques to support growing enrichment operations
  • Advance enrichment technology outcomes through chemistry and materials research
  • Perform research to develop new chemical and materials conversion techniques
  • Perform recovery, purification, and conversions of gas and solid isotopes
  • Contribute to technical papers, journal articles, reports, and proposals for internal and external release, and represent the organization and sponsors via technical presentations in workshops and conferences
  • Collaborate within a multidisciplinary, multi-laboratory environment with scientists, engineers, and technicians
  • Ensure compliance with environment, safety, health and quality program requirements
  • Demonstrate dedication to strong teaming and a positive culture within the organization

 

 Basic Qualifications:

  • A Ph.D. Degree, or an M.S. with 2-year laboratory experience, or a B.S. with 10-year laboratory experience in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, Materials Engineering, or related discipline
  • Hands-on experience in chemical synthesis and conversion
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Demonstrated attention to detail when working with exotic and expensive materials including meticulous handling and documentation
  • This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program.
     

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in chemical characterization techniques and quantitative analyses
  • Experience with mass spectrometry
  • Hands-on experience in inorganic and/or analytical chemistry
  • Experience in gas handling and vacuum systems
  • Experience in project management or leadership
  • Knowledge in metallurgy and nuclear science
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a SCI clearance
