­­Overview:  

We're hiring a KDI Data Engineer to work with the sponsors and research users to deliver and maintain data pipelines including ETL and reporting workflows as well as data management and data lifecycles! You should be comfortable across multiple technologies including Linux, SQL, Python, containers, Pandas, Spark, and source control within a high security environment.

 

The Knowledge Discovery Infrastructure (KDI) program serves to facilitate research activities on data that has been entrusted to ORNL by the U.S Department of Veteran’s Affairs (VA) and other agencies. As such, you will have the opportunity to work on some of the most ambitious and impactful research and development programs in healthcare informatics, bioinformatics, and computer science.

 

This position resides in the Emerging Technologies & Computing group of the Research Computing division, in the Information Technology Services Directorate at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (https://www.ornl.gov/) (ORNL).

 

Major Duties/Responsibilities: 

  • Develop high-scale, robust data warehouses, and data lakes with special focus on the state-of-the-art solutions for healthcare, life sciences, and genomics.
  • Collaborate with research teams to understand data needs, and guidance to research teams, and other team members about the data models, query optimizations, and schema interpretation.
  • Design, build and launch both new data/study marts for major national research programs and new data quality, data extraction, transformation and loading processes.
  • Design and develop high-performance database architectures for intake, curation, organization, and dissemination of data in support of data science and related subject areas.

Basic Qualifications:

  • A BS in computer science, computer engineering, information technology, information systems, science, engineering, business, or a related field of study and a minimum of  five (5) to seven (7) years of aligned professional experience is required for consideration.
    • Masters and PhD degree holders in the same fields of study are also encouraged to apply. Masters holders should have four (4) to six (6) years of aligned professional experience and PhD holders should have one (1) to three (3) years of aligned professional experience.
  • Three (3) or more years' experience in database design and/or development.
     

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Five (5) plus years of proven experience in the following areas:
    • Basic and advanced SQL, database programming, and scripting languages (Python preferred).
    • Data warehousing systems.
    • Database system administration.
    • Data driven software development.
  • OLTP and data warehousing, SQL Server experience
  • Experience in creating analytics data systems.
  • Experience working with Big Data processing frameworks such as Spark, Dask, and Pandas, and with NoSQL architectures.
  • Experience with collecting, organizing, storing, and preparing data analysis.
  • Ability to conduct tasks independently and communicate fluently with team members and customers.
  • Heath care informatics experience.
  • Working experience or basic understanding of AI/ML data requirements.
