Overview:

We are seeking an experienced Staff Nurse/Medical Intelligence officer who will report to and assist the Medical Director with global infectious disease monitoring in the event of a global infectious disease outbreak  as well as focus on Occupational and Environmental Medicine clinic duties. This position resides in the Health Services Division (HSD), Environment, Safety, Health & Quality (ESH&Q) Directorate at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).

 

Major Duties/Responsibilities: 

  • Occupational and Environmental Medicine duties

    • Assist with Fitness for Duty evaluations

    • Workers Compensation cases

    • Return to work evaluations

    • Perform employee physicals, screening, and evaluation, and provide care under the supervision of a physician, nurse practitioner, or physicans assistant

  • Surveillance and Monitoring

    • Track disease outbreaks: Monitor global, regional, and local disease trends to identify emerging infectious diseases or reemerging ones that could pose a threat.

    • Monitor epidemiological reports: Analyze data from international health organizations (e.g., WHO, CDC), national health agencies, and intelligence sources to track infectious disease outbreaks.

    • Environmental scanning: Identify factors such as climate change, travel patterns, and socio-political events that could influence the spread of infectious diseases.

  • Nursing duties/care

    • Assist with emergency care.

    • Perform vaccinations, EKGs, vital signs, venipunctiure, blood draws, IV/INT starts, medication administration, and emergency care to employees in/when necessary, as prescribed by a physician, nurse practioner, or physicians assistant.

  • Support infectious disease outbreak requirements

    • Communicates with employees who have been exposed to or diagnosed with infectious diseases.

    • Assist with Case Management as required.

  • Other duties supporting HSD needs at the discretion of the ORNL Medical Director based on education, training, and experience; additional duties may be at alternate ORNL site.

 

Basic Qualifications:

  • RN/BSN degree with a minimum of 5 years of experience as a registered nurse

  • License to practice nursing in the State of Tennessee

  • BLS, ACLS, ICU experience / emergency department experience

  • Experience and certification as a Certified Occupational Health Nurse (COHN) or Certified Occupational Health Nurse-Specialist (COHNS). Note: This certification is required within two years of date of hire.

  • Ability to travel

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in managing infectious disease outbreaks (e.g., as a clinician in an outbreak setting or as a public health worker).

  • Research experience related to infectious disease epidemiology, surveillance, diagnostics, or pathogen behavior.

  • Field experience in tropical diseases, zoonotic diseases, or emerging infectious diseases

  • Experience in DOE associated Occupational Health Clinic strongly desired

  • MPH or MBA

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills

  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory 

  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced clinical environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs

 

Special Requirements:

  • Physicial Requirements: Work involves various physical requirements and working conditions. As such, a pre-hire physical will be required after offer.

  • Q or L clearance: This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program.

  • Visa sponsorship: Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.
