Overview
Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is seeking a System Engineer lead for our Operations Support Group that supports our world class radioisotope production program. The Operations Support Group resides within the newly formed Isotope Processing and Manufacturing Division (IPMD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). IPMD is focused on the reliable delivery of radioisotope products. This work supports the largest radioisotope production and research portfolio within the Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Science for Isotope R&D and Production. Work is performed in gloveboxes/shielded hot cells within several unique radiological and nuclear facilities throughout the ORNL campus. The System Engineer Lead position directly supports specific product lines by proactively managing activities that improve equipment reliability and availability. This position will have accountability to Operations Support Group Leader for engineering and maintenance support to minimize equipment downtime and enable reliable Production operations. Responsibilities will include communicating production priorities for long-term sustainment needs involved in equipment budgeting and maintenance and representing the Production organization in meetings to identify and prioritize activities that resolve equipment availability issues and promote equipment reliability.
Major Duties/Responsibilities:
- Serving as the single point of contact and owner of process equipment and infrastructure systems for specific product lines. Responsible for ensuring equipment and systems are available to support Production operations. Develop and maintain processes to enhance equipment reliability.
- Working with Production staff and Nonreactor Nuclear Facilities Division (NNFD)/ Radioisotope Science and Technology Division (RSTD) engineering staffs for the implementation and effective execution of recommended equipment maintenance, upgrades, and replacement strategies.
- Assisting the Operations Support Group Leader in prioritizing equipment maintenance.
- Understanding the Production deliverables schedule and assisting in identifying and resolving equipment chokepoints created by ongoing reliability issues.
- Maintaining a consolidated database that serves as the central point of information regarding the definition of long-range sustainment projects for product lines and associated risk to the mission based on equipment condition monitoring.
- Developing a consolidated long-range plan and funding strategy for process equipment and infrastructure over the five-year planning horizon for the budgeting process.
- Serving as the system owner for the tools used for system health monitoring, including resolution of issues affecting the generation of system status reports and/or incorporation of improvement suggestions based on field use.
- Serving in a reliability engineering role for specific equipment availability issues based on field performance concerns.
- Monitoring execution of preventative maintenance programs to ensure execution meets expectations.
- Identifying areas where maintenance program effectiveness or efficiency can be enhanced and working with cross-functional teams to bring about improvement to processes.
Basic Qualifications
- This position requires a B.S. in a technical field with a minimum of 5 years relevant experience or an equivalent combination of education and applicable experience.
- Proven ability to function well in a Production environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs.
- An understanding of manufacturing, maintenance processes, and supply chain management.
- Ability to work and communicate (written and oral) effectively with diverse teams of engineers, scientists, and technicians.
- Ability to hold and maintain a DOE security clearance is required.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with DOE safety, security, and regulatory requirements
- Active DOE Q clearance
This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program.
This position is a full-time staff position.
