The National Security Sciences, IT Systems Group at the Oak Ridge Field Intelligence Element (FIE) invites candidates to apply for a Systems Administrator position, to provide user support for FIE members and scientific research and development. ORNL is the largest US DOE science and energy laboratory, conducting basic and applied research to deliver transformative solutions to compelling problems. Major Duties and Responsibilities:

The primary responsibilities for this position are user support, system administration and troubleshooting. Including but not limited to: Windows Operating Systems, Microsoft Office, Desktop imaging, Active Directory, software product updates, vulnerability resolution. This position will maintain information technology equipment and resources, configure, troubleshoot, modify and repair desktops, perform problem resolution for operating systems and applications. This position may interface with the Department of Energy Headquarters (DOE HQ), Other Government Agencies (OGA's), and external customers to design, upgrade, maintain, and troubleshoot new and existing systems.

  • PC Deployment – Performs imaging on new PC’s including software installation.
  • Unified Communications support – Installs and maintains UC equipment
  • Surplus Coordination – Documents and coordinates IT hardware surplus equipment process for inventory purposes.
  • Troubleshooting and administration of Windows based applications, Operating Systems
  • Accurately log and update tickets, to ensure tracking of all technical support calls.
  • Developing a proactive and positive relationship with customers.
  • Keeping customers informed by providing status updates.
  • Suggest and implement solutions based on customer requirements and project goals.
  • Assist other Cyber & IT professionals as required.


Qualifications Required:

  • Bachelors degree in computer science or related field. Equivalent combination of education and/or experience will be considered. 
  • Enjoy working with people and customers

  • Carry out assigned tasks in a timely, diligent, and professional manner.
  • Establish proactive, confidence-inspiring client and support team relationships to ensure support, maintenance and project work meet business goals.

  • Good problem-solving skills and the ability to visualize a problem or situation and think abstractly to solve it is required.
  • Ability to handle constantly changing tasks and priorities, to be able to multitask effectively during busy times and to exercise patience and professionalism during stressful situations is needed.
  • Ability to work on a team of other administrators and with other groups to troubleshoot issues and solve problems
  • Communicate with customers to resolve inquiries or incidents in a timely and professional manner.


Qualifications Desired:

  • Experience with VTC and VOIP systems
  • Experience managing user and computer objects in Active Directory


Special Requirement:

This position requires the possession of and the ability to maintain a Top Secret (TS) or DOE “Q” security clearance and the ability to obtain a Sensitive Compartmented Information (SCI) clearance based on Intelligence Community Directive (ICD) 704 requirements. Additionally, all employees of the Division are required to successfully complete a security evaluation, including a Counterintelligence scope polygraph examination.  As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program.  Some afterhours work is required.
