Overview: 

Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is seeking a System Engineer and Software Developer to support the Research Reactor Division (RRD) within the Neutron Science Directorate (NScD). RRD operates the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR), the United States’ highest flux reactor-based neutron source. 

 

The System Engineer and Software Developer is responsible for the development and maintenance of software systems to support reactor operations and serves as a point of contact for most IT-related work. You will work closely with other group members within the Information Technology Services Division (ITSD) and interface with researchers, engineers and other staff members at RRD. You will report to the Neutron Systems Engineering and Support group leader within ITSD.


Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Manage a suite of reactor-related, web based applications developed mainly in Cold Fusion with a userbase of around 300 users.
  • Administer production and development ColdFusion application servers. Includes upgrading, setting up datasources, applying updates, and managing application and request settings.
  • Administer Microsoft Internet Information Server (IIS) websites for production and development server.  This includes setting up virtual directories, application pools, updating SSL certificates, maintaining URL rewrite scripts, setting file and share permissions, and performance monitoring
  • Create new applications when requested using a full-stack development process.  Includes working with the customer to establish requirements, designing and developing the back-end Microsoft SQL Server database structure and code, creating the front-end code, performing all testing and creating any needed Software Quality Assurance (SQA) documentation.
  • Maintain interfaces to commercial-off-the-shelf software applications (eSOMS, BI Financial, SAP).
  • Maintain web services which are used to enable others access to our data.
  • Create and maintain code that uses Aspose Word for Java to create and manipulate MS Word documents.
  • Maintain Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) code used for a custom Microsoft Word Ribbon used by division procedure writers.
  • Maintain Perl script used to export data from ABB eSOMS application to GE Proficy Historian application for trending of plant data.
  • Provide off hours support during maintenance windows and on-call support rotation.

 

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related technical subjects and five plus years of experience (or an equivalent combination of education and experience).
  • Experience with cold fusion, scripting, database triggers, stored procedures and functions.
  • Core competency includes hands-on web application development, support & design in a database-centric environment.
  • Experience developing, testing, and deploying code into the appropriate environment.
  • Excellent communication, organizational skills, time management and problem-solving abilities.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with one or more programming languages (Java, JavaScript, HTML, and Python).
  • Experience in an environment requiring change control processes.
  • Experience working with business processes such as procurement, warehousing, document management, records management, and the like.
  • Experience working in support of an operating facility (ideally a nuclear facility).
