Overview: 

 

The Testing Science and Cascade Engineering Section within the Enrichment Science and Engineering Division (ESED) is seeking a Systems and Network Engineer to provide technical support working in the Electrical, Instrumentation, and Controls Group.  This group implements advanced control system architectures for centrifuge test beds and enrichment systems through human machine interface research and design, system logic development, and instrumentation hardware integration. This position will have an emphasis in Systems and Network design, implementation, and management to make a significant contribution to projects involving isotope enrichment.

 

Purpose:

 

The Enrichment Science and Engineering Division serves the nation in two critical areas: advancing enrichment technologies and exploring stable isotope production and applications. The division leverages an elite staff of scientists and engineers with the world-leading capabilities of Oak Ridge National Laboratory to deliver groundbreaking advancements with a variety of applications, from national security to life-saving medical treatments.

ESED is the national steward for the research, development, and demonstration of centrifuge technology. The successful candidate will provide technical professional support within the section that strategically advances science and technology focused on gas testing of prototype enrichment devices for processing uranium-bearing and stable isotope compounds.

 

Major Duties / Responsibilities:

 

The successful candidate will work as part of a research, design, test, and evaluation team with the primary responsibility of configuring and managing computer systems and networks and directing other staff in these tasks. The successful candidate will work well in a team environment, both as a contributing member and a leader as necessary. Team members are expected to influence the direction of the project by applying their creativity and ability to develop innovative solutions in a multi-organization environment. The successful candidate must also work with minimal supervision and will be expected to provide input and influence project direction through interaction with project team leadership. It will require the ability to learn new software, technologies, and systems without formal training. This position requires the flexibility to adapt to a wide variety of projects to meet the priorities of sponsoring agencies. This position will require some report writing and presentation skills.

 

In this role the successful candidate will:

 

  • Specify new computers and network components
  • Design and upgrade Local Area Networks as recommended by EIA/TIA standards
  • Ensure cablings, equipment installation, and computer setup is properly done.
  • Image Windows workstations and servers for project use
  • Design, implement and manage Windows domains
  • Develop and implement backup strategies
  • Deploy and manage systems in a virtual environment
  • Manage network switches and associated network devices including time servers and network connected instruments
  • Install and manage software license servers
  • Create scripts to manage computers and devices
  • Create Windows systems images using Microsoft Sysprep for deployment to multiple systems
  • Provide operational support for the systems including some off-hours and weekend work as required to support 24/7 operational testing efforts
  • Work in accordance with ORNL, EESD, and ESEI Group procedures and programs including Environment, Safety, Health, and Quality (EHS&Q)

 

Required Qualifications:

 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Engineering, or related discipline and at least 5 years of applicable experience
  • Demonstrated experience in management of Windows Domains and Windows workstations and servers in Domain and non-Domain environments
  • Demonstrated experience in hardware design, installation, and configuration of local area networks
  • Demonstrated knowledge of networking technologies including Ethernet LANs, Network switches, time servers, and implementation of LAN wiring to EIA/TIA and best practice standards
  • Sound knowledge of communications protocols including Ethernet, IP, UDP, TCP, PTP, NTP, and DHCP
  • Employee may be required to work near radiation, cryogenic and high voltage areas and work could involve climbing ladders and the use of fall protection; therefore, the candidate must be able to acquire and maintain appropriate training and qualifications to work in these areas and follow all safety instructions
  • Experience creating network drawings
  • Good written and verbal communication skills with demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with management, scientists, engineers, and technicians
  • This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse Program (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program.
  • The ability to obtain a DOE Q clearance is required

 

Preferred Qualifications:

 

  • Active DOE Q clearance
  • Master’s degree in Computer Engineering, or related discipline with at least 4 years of applicable experience or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Experience managing Unix and/or Linux workstations and servers
  • Experience with EtherNet/IP, ProfiNet, and Profibus industrial communication protocols
  • Experience with an industry standard SCADA system
