Overview:
US ITER is hiring an experienced Project Engineer having a background in the design, specification, and procurement of process mechanical hardware delivered by US ITER for the Tokamak Cooling Water System (TCWS)! This will include a broad spectrum of hardware ranging from custom designed components to commercially available equipment which will operate in radiation and electromagnetic environments. Project Engineers manage and provide oversight of design and/or manufacturing contracts of various sizes. You'll collaborate with vendors, engineering personnel within the US ITER project and personnel at the ITER headquarters in France, as well as approve manufacturing plan milestones and intervention points as agreed by engineering and QA personnel. You may serve the role of Control Account Manager (CAM) and/or Technical Project Officer (TPO).
The United States is a partner nation in ITER, an unprecedented international collaboration of scientists and engineers working to design, construct, and assemble a burning plasma experiment that can demonstrate the scientific and technological feasibility of fusion energy. A self-heated burning plasma is a crucial step in fusion energy development. US ITER is a DOE Office of Science project hosted by Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) in Tennessee. Partner labs are Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory (PPPL) and Savannah River National Laboratory (SRNL). ITER's other partners are the People's Republic of China, the European Union, India, Japan, the Republic of Korea, and the Russian Federation. Major Duties and Responsibilities:
- Leads procurement of TCWS components (such as tanks, pumps, piping, filters, etc.) ensuring compliance of the equipment with the design and quality expectations.
- Lead evaluation of proposals for vendor selection and contract award.
- Participate in technical review of final design documents and drawings including Process Flow Diagrams, Process & Instrumentation Diagrams, Technical Specifications, analysis calculations and drawings for TCWS components and assemblies.
- Works with a multi-functional team of engineers and designers including US ITER QA, Procurement, and Project Controls support, to support specific procurement contract activities.
- Evaluates fabrication deviation requests and non-conformances from industrial suppliers.
- Specifies US ITER intervention points (hold points, witness points, customer inspections) during fabrication and participate/lead all aspects of these activities.
- Foreign and domestic travel to fabricators, support subcontractors, and sponsor (IO) facilities is required (<35%)

Basic Qualifications:
- A Bachelor's degree in Engineering or a related field of study.
- Minimum of five (5) years of relevant technical experience demonstrating understanding of design and manufacturing of mechanical systems and components.
- Proven track record to deliver project goals, utilize project management tools to support execution of project scope, and interface effectively with vendors and fabricators.
- Ability to work with a diverse group of researchers, engineers, and technicians; domestic and international.
- Excellent written and verbal communications skills.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Minimum of two (2) years' experience managing subcontracts from a project management perspective.
- Familiarity with DOE procurement guidelines.
- Experience with matrixed support organizations.
- Experience with Quality Assurance / Quality Control as well as change control during the manufacturing and inspection process.
- Familiarity with ESP-ESPN (Nuclear Pressurized Equipment (from French "Equipements Sous Pression Nucléaire") French rules.
- Familiarity with design and analysis: Large piping systems and supports design/analysis to design codes AISC, Eurocode, ASME, etc.
- Basic experience and knowledge of system engineering principles of complex projects.
- Familiarity with U.S. codes (ASME B31.3) for proses piping and standards for design and construction.
- Experience in the commercial nuclear industry and/or with fusion research and development.
- Experience working in an international environment.
