Overview:    

We are seeking a Target Electrical Support Technician who will focus on Collaborating with researchers, engineers and fellow designers to troubleshoot and install electrical and electronic systems and solutions for scientific Instruments, prototypes, motion controls and experimental setups.  This position resides in the Maintenance Support Group in the Operations Integration and Maintenance Section, Research Accelerator Division, Neutron Sciences Directorate at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).

Major Duties/Responsibilities:   

  • Collaborate with researchers, engineers, and fellow designers to troubleshoot and install electrical and electronic systems and solutions for scientific instruments, prototypes, motion control, and experimental setups. 

  • Use AutoCAD, Excel, and Word to access technical information regarding Target Systems.  

  • Coordinate fabrication with the Research Mechanics for manufacturing, fabrication, and installation purposes. 

  • Provide control system installation and operational support for the Target Utilities and Neutron Instruments. 

  • Modify design of current systems to accommodate user needs. 

  • Perform tasks efficiently and collaborate with senior design staff. 

  • Prepare clear, complete, and accurate work plans and detail drawings from layouts, rough or detailed sketches, electronic databases, or written or verbal instructions. 

  • Participate in personal development to continually build/refine skills.

Basic Qualifications: 

  • An AS degree in an engineering related field with a minimum of 10 years of experience in electrical and control systems design and engineering. 

  • An equivalent combination of education and experience will also be considered (a high school diploma with a minimum of 12 years of relevant experience or a bachelor’s degree in an engineering related field with at least 6 years of relevant experience). 

  • Experience in 3D CAD, or similar or proven ability to learn new CAD system on the job in recent work. 

 

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Experience in AutoCAD software. 

  • Experience in working with industrial control and motion control systems. 

  • Knowledge of the technical concepts of drafting and engineering principles, codes, and standards. 

  • Excellent problem-solving and critical-thinking skills, with the ability to identify and resolve design challenges. 

  • Effective interpersonal skills and the ability to collaborate within multidisciplinary teams. 

  • Awareness of various manufacturing techniques and their associated tolerance capabilities/limitations. 

  • Experience in the research or scientific community. 

 

Special Requirements:  

  • Work involves various physical requirements and working conditions. As such, a pre-hire physical will be required after offer.
