The Information Technology Services Division (ITSD) at ORNL provides IT services that enable ORNL staff to be productively engaged in the business of world-class research and development. Such services include strategic platforms and operations, network and telecommunications, R&D systems engineering, customer service, applications development, cyber security, project management, planning and architecture.

We are seeking a leader for our Hosting Services Team, which is responsible for managing a broad portfolio of Enterprise Services, Infrastructure Systems, and Data Center Space. Successful candidates will demonstrate strong leadership abilities, excellent communication, and deep technical skills.

 

Major Duties/Responsibilities: 

  • Coordinate daily activities required to deploy and support enterprise systems with a very high availability percentage.
  • Develop strategic plans to support future needs and keep the infrastructure technically responsive to the needs of the Lab.
  • Analyze departmental needs and establish priorities for feasibility studies, systems design and implementation to develop new and/or modify the company's networking and infrastructure systems.
  • Ensure that the Enterprise environment remains secure and appropriate recovery and redundancy issues are addressed.
  • Establish and maintain vendor relationships in support of new and ongoing work.
  • Develop and manage detailed work plans, project estimates, status reports, project tracking and analysis, and set work schedules to achieve organizational goals.
  • Develop, implement, and drive performance analysis and capacity planning for Enterprise infrastructure.
  • Identify areas where automation of processes and other potential process improvements are possible and drive towards improving overall efficiency.
  • Apply continuous improvement techniques to ensure system infrastructure attains maximum performance, security, and availability.
  • Direct, manage and plan Enterprise infrastructure systems activities to ensure achievement of company-wide technical needs and objectives.

The Team Lead will also lead a team of highly-technical professionals to deliver Infrastructure and Data Center Services. This includes selecting, coaching, and developing team members; planning, preparing, and devising work schedules; establishing and evaluating performance standards; and other personnel matters, raising these to the Group Leader as appropriate.

Basic Qualifications:

  •  Bachelor’s degree in a business or computing-relevant field and eight (8) years of relevant experience. A combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • Demonstrated experience analyzing and researching problems of a complex nature, and making judgment decisions and recommendations as to their solution.
  • Experience with network infrastructure performance monitoring and investigative tools.
  • Knowledge and expertise of server operating systems, such as Windows, Linux, etc.
  • Experience maintaining Active Directory and Ping Identity Services.
  • Experience in virtualization with VMware.
  • Experience training and mentoring groups and individuals in complex technical concepts and procedures.
  • Demonstrated experience providing excellent customer service to internal and/or external customers.
  • This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a clearance from the Department of Energy.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Advanced Degree in information technology or related field.
  • 10+ years of experience leading enterprise level operations teams.
  • Solid understanding of industry-standard datacenter design principles and best practices.
  • Knowledge in Infrastructure as Code or automation principles.
  • Knowledge of monitoring systems capable of analyzing storage and compute systems.
  • Familiarity with supporting and enabling Research and Development (R&D) institutions.
  • Experience creating and maintaining quality documentation.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills and the ability to manage and assess technical projects through completion.
  • Ability to handle multiple priorities and tight deadlines.
  • Effective written and oral communication skills.
  • Experience with federal IT compliance requirements.

Q clearance: This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program.
