Overview: 
We are seeking a Technical Assistant Staff Member to join our research team working on a variety of materials development and vapor-phase processing projects.  This individual will perform tasks assigned by multiple staff scientists and program leads that will primarily involve laboratory-based activities, but may also include contributing to publications and development of new work.  This work will involve a variety of processing and characterization techniques including chemical vapor deposition/infiltration (CVD/CVI), hot pressing, powder processing, electron and optical microscopy, energy dispersive spectroscopy, and thermochemical analysis.  Mechanical design and computer aided drafting work will also be required in support of new equipment installations.  The individual will also be responsible for many aspects of the daily operation of laboratory areas. This position resides in the Materials Processing and Joining Group in the Materials Science and Technology Division (MSTD), Physical Sciences Directorate (PSD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).  

Major Duties/Responsibilities: 
• Direct and personally conduct hands-on work in a variety of materials processing laboratories
• Design and facilitate fabrication of custom components and fixtures for a variety of processing equipment
• Acquire, process, and summarize complex data
• Perform work according to specific rules and requirements for quality assurance and general laboratory safety as this work involves numerous hazardous chemicals
• Contribute to the preparation of papers and presentations describing research results for technical manuscripts, peer-reviewed journals, conferences, program reviews, and technical committees

Basic Qualifications:
• A Bachelor of Science in materials science, mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, or a closely related field
• At least 1 year of experience in materials processing
• The ability to obtain and maintain a DOE L or Q clearance from the Department of Energy

Preferred Qualifications:
• Master of Science in materials science, mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, or a closely related field
• Demonstrated ability for meticulous hands-on work
• Safety conscious with the demonstrated ability to work safely with hazardous chemicals, i.e. flammable, pyrophoric, toxic, etc…
• Experience operating and maintaining CVD/CVI equipment
• General experience with materials processing and related equipment such as high temperature furnaces, hot pressing, and spark plasma sintering
• Microscopy experience (both optical and electron) including energy dispersive spectroscopy
• Mechanical design experience using 3D computer aided design software, i.e. SolidWorks or similar
• Familiar with programming and operation of 3D printers
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills

Special Requirement:
This position requires that you have the ability to obtain and maintain a DOE L or Q clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program.
