Technical Associate Staff Member- Nanomaterials Synthesis and Characterization
Date: Mar 4, 2023
Location: Oak Ridge, TN, US, 37830
Company: Oak Ridge National Laboratory
Requisition Id 10003
Overview:
We are seeking a Technical Professional Staff Member to coordinate lab operations and support ongoing research efforts in the synthesis and processing of novel nanomaterials and conduct functional testing to measure their optical, electronic, and catalytic properties. This position resides in the Functional Hybrid Nanomaterials (FHN) Group within the Center for Nanophase Materials Sciences (CNMS). You will provide primary safety and operations oversight for multiple materials and chemistry laboratories, coordinate operations, and plan user activities and experiments within the FHN group. You will work with FHN staff to oversee facility and instrument operations, maintenance/repairs, and training, while contributing to CNMS research focused on developing novel methods for growing two-dimensional materials via chemical vapor transport and implementing methods for their clean transfer onto novel substrates by chemical etching and stamping to enable their characterization and testing. The CNMS is one of five nanoscale science research centers in the U.S. and has a world-class in-house research program and supports over 600 users per year who access specialized equipment and staff expertise to conduct research. The FHN manages laboratories at the CNMS with expertise and equipment for nanomaterials synthesis by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) and pulsed laser deposition (PLD), laser and plasma processing, optical characterization by laser spectroscopy techniques (Raman, PL, UV-Vis, nonlinear, ultrafast, cathodoluminescence scanning electron microscopy), testing and characterization of catalytic properties (GC-MS, FTIR, BET), electrical measurements (4-probe, semiconductor analyzer, impedance spectroscopy), and multimodal environmental testing (gravimetric, humidity, impedance, optical on QCM platforms).
Major Duties/Responsibilities:
- Maintenance and safety oversight of several key materials and chemistry laboratories
- Coordinate user access and training for FHN laboratories and contribute to fundamental research in nanomaterial synthesis, characterization, and functional testing
- Learn and refine methods for growth and transfer of 2D materials to perform sample preparation, transfer, and characterization for multiple research efforts across the CNMS
- Learn and perform coordinated laboratory tasks including electrode deposition, UV-Vis and Raman microspectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy to characterize 2D materials and advance the fabrication of prototype devices for various platforms across the CNMS
- Oversee laboratory operations including the purchase and management of materials and chemical inventories, coordinate tool installation and maintenance, and supervise material handling
Basic Qualifications:
- A B.S. degree and a minimum of 2 years of related experience, or an M.S. and at least 1 year of related experience or a Ph.D. in a related field
- Degree areas should be in the field of chemistry, material science, engineering or physics
Preferred Qualifications:
- Technical experience in experimental laboratory chemistry or materials science
- Experience in vacuum system operation and/or physical vapor deposition methods
- Experience in synthesis and processing of inorganic materials
- Specialized computer scientific programming experience in (e.g, MATLAB, Python, CAD, LabVIEW)
- Experience in materials characterization techniques, such as SEM, AFM, XRD, BET, GC-MS, FTIR
- A demonstrated ability to manage task schedules, communicate experimental results, and adjust and communicate experimental plan according to observations
- Proven communication skills, both written (including computer) and verbal to support researchers
- Strong commitment to safety and service
