Overview

The Biosciences Division (https://www.ornl.gov/division/bsd) within ORNL seeks a full-time technical professional staff member to perform genetic analysis and genetic modification of non-model plants. The Biosciences Division is focused on advancing science and technology to better understand complex biological systems and their relationship with the environment. The division has expertise and special facilities in genomics, genetics, computational biology, bioanalytical science, microbiology, microbial ecology, biophysics, synthetic biology, and plant sciences. The research is concerned with the basic science underlying bioenergy production, synthetic biology for bioproducts, carbon cycling and sequestration, and biosecurity.

 

Purpose

This staff member will collaborate with team members at ORNL and external partners to modulate gene expression and protein production in non-model plants. You will contribute to experimental design, analysis and interpretation of plant ‘omics experiments, developing unique analytical tools for molecular plant biology.

 

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Extract and purify DNA, RNA, proteins, and metabolites from non-model plants.
  • Perform targeted gene expression analysis using RT-qPCR.
  • Prepare RNA-seq libraries for untargeted gene expression analyses.
  • Prepare proteins for semi-quantitative proteomic analysis.
  • Analyze small molecules using LC-MS metabolomics methods.
  • Work independently to develop, troubleshoot, and execute analytical methods.
  • Contribute to data management, visualization, and analysis as well as reporting.
  • Assist with project management activities.
  • Oversee instrument installation, maintenance, problem solving and training of new users.
  • Ensure compliance with environment, safety, health and quality program requirements.

 

Basic Qualifications

  • BS or MS in Biochemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Cellular and Molecular Biology, Microbiology, or a related discipline
  • 2-3 years of demonstrated experience developing, executing, and troubleshooting molecular biology and quantitative analytical methods
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills are required to enable effective interaction with researchers, operations staff, and external partners.
  • Outstanding organization skills, including the ability to coordinate and work productively on multiple tasks

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with large-scale gene expression analyses, including RNA-seq
  • Plant biology and molecular methods
  • Analytical mass spectrometry experience
  • Statistical analysis skills using large biological datasets
  • Project management skills
  • Experience with environmental, safety, health and quality programs and regulatory processes

 

Special Requirement:

This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program.
