Purpose:

Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is the largest US Department of Energy Science and Energy Laboratory, conducting basic and applied research to deliver transformative solutions to compelling problems in energy and security. Our diverse capabilities span a broad range of scientific and engineering disciplines, enabling the Laboratory to explore fundamental science challenges and to carry out the research needed to accelerate the delivery of solutions to the marketplace. We are seeking a professional to fill a Technical Research Professional position in the Multifunctional Equipment Integration (MEI) group within the Buildings and Transportation Sciences Division (BTSD), Energy Science and Technology Directorate (ESTD) at ORNL. The team consists of researchers and technical professionals focused on conducting research in world-class facilities and deploying science-based knowledge in real-world deployment applications. The work supports a range of activities under the U.S. DOE Building Technologies Office and Industrial Efficiency and Decarbonization Office. This position requires working with project leads, external partners, corporations, and sponsors to develop project management tools and analysis frameworks along with coordinating regular research and development activities. Candidate selection will be based on qualifications, relevant experience, skills, and education.

 

Overview:

The Multifunctional Equipment Integration (MEI) Group in the Buildings and Transportation Science Division (BTSD) at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is seeking applicants for a technical professional who provides comprehensive project management support.  The successful candidate performs project-level data management and tracking, coordination of research and development activities, and engagement with internal and external partners. This position augments ORNL's team capabilities for the implementation of sound, cost-effective energy solutions for the building sector to enhance the nation's energy security and environmental stewardship.

 

The Multifunctional Equipment Integration Group develops state-of-the-art energy-efficient and environmental-friendly solutions for building equipment and focuses on grid integration, advanced energy storage, and energy conversion systems. The group leverages novel thermodynamics processes, advanced materials and manufacturing, and process control to advance building equipment. Research conducted includes advanced dehumidification systems and indoor air quality; energy storage solutions integrated into applications such as air conditioning and water heating; advanced heat exchanger design for applications including heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration;  modular power generation and desalination; energy-efficient appliances; natural gas and hybrid fuel driven equipment and integrated solutions for direct carbon dioxide capture using air handling systems for buildings. The group has the unique ability to develop solutions for critical problems by utilizing advanced materials and manufacturing processes, and advanced computational and neutron resources.

 

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

You will be responsible for coordinating and supporting research and development for advanced building technologies. (1) Data analysis and reporting (2) Managing and developing training modules (3) supporting budget management and forecasting (4) internal and external stakeholder engagement (5) planning and coordinating technical workshops, conferences, and similar events. The work will involve interacting and collaborating with researchers from universities, national laboratories, and private industry.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science or in an engineering, science or related discipline with at least five years of relevant experience is required.  

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Research and development experience (including academic, research fellow, and/or industry) is preferred.

  • The candidate should possess a strong background (or other direct experience) in project and training management.
