We are looking for highly motivated applicants with expertise in nuclear software development which will be applied to the development of nuclear analysis software. We have an opening for a mid- or senior-career technical professional in the Power Reactor Modeling (PRM) Group within the Nuclear Energy and Fuel Cycle Division (NEFCD), Fusion and Fission Energy Directorate. NEFCD develops and integrates state-of-the-art modeling and simulation capabilities for a wide variety of nuclear science and engineering problems, including radiation transport, computational fluid dynamics, structural dynamics, and nuclear fuel performance to customers worldwide for use on single processor to high-performance computing (HPC) hardware platforms. The RMP Group develops and applies state-of-the-art modeling and simulation capabilities for lattice physics, reactor core, spent fuel, and fuel cycle applications through leadership in the development of SCALE and Virtual Environment for Reactor Applications (VERA) and in collaboration with industry, national laboratories, and university researchers.


Job Duties and Responsibilities: 


  • Application-driven methods development for radiation transport, neutronics, and coupled multiphysics for light-water and advanced reactor applications 
  • Design, optimization, and performance analysis of light-water and advanced reactor performance using VERA and SCALE
  • Design and development of software user features, tests, verification, and validation using a Software Quality Assurance Plan (SQAP) for production-quality nuclear software and its global distribution
  • Effectively work independently and within a team to develop large multi-component scientific and data-intensive software to meet the requirements of projects within scope, schedule, and budget
  • Communicate effectively about the technical aspects of the work performed through reports, code manuals, publications, and presentations


Required Qualifications:


  • Candidates must have a MS in software engineering, computer science, nuclear engineering, or a related field, and at least 5 years work experience. 
  • Candidates must have demonstrated advanced programming experience, including the use of Fortran or C/C++.
  • Demonstrated written and communication skills to enable effective archival documentation of code are required.
  • This position requires access to technology that is subject to export control requirements. Successful candidates must be qualified for such access without an export control license.


Preferred Qualifications: 


  • PhD in engineering or computational science
  • The successful candidate should have experience using and developing software for HPC architecture.
  • Knowledge of software engineering best practices including continuous integration, requirements management, and object-oriented programming concepts and design patterns is required.
  • The candidate should have experience developing collaborative software with a computational nuclear analysis code suite.
  • Experience working within a rigorous software quality assurance program is preferred.
