This position is for an associate technical professional in the newly formed Radioisotope Science and Technology Division at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL.) The Radioisotope Science and Technology Division is responsible for production, handling, separations, and dispensing of a variety of nuclear materials. We are seeking applicants with experience in the fields of nuclear engineering, materials irradiation, and nuclear materials handling, to oversee the production of several industrial radioisotopes and support general material handling within a category II nuclear facility.


Major Duties/Responsibilities: 

  • Oversee the fabrication and testing of stable isotope targets for insertion in the High Flux Isotope Reactor for production of radioisotopes
  • Plan for irradiations to meet the projected demand for radioisotopes
  • Manage the transportation associated with moving nuclear materials on ORNL campus
  • With the support of radiochemists, plan for the chemical processing of irradiated materials and subsequent purification, storage, and dispensing of products
  • Develop long term budgets and resource loaded schedules for radioisotope supply


Basic Qualifications:

  • This position requires a Bachelor of Science in nuclear engineering, chemical engineering, or a related field and two years of relevant experience
  • Work towards a graduate degree with relevant research experience may be applied towards this requirement
  • Demonstrated experience in the production or handling of radiological materials, including knowledge of ALARA principles and radiological work controls
  • Familiarity with the capabilities and limitations of analytical techniques including gamma-ray spectroscopy
  • Understanding of the fundamental mechanisms for production of radioisotopes through neutron irradiation
  • Project planning, experience in the development of cost and schedule estimates


This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program.
