The Building Equipment Research Group in the Buildings and Transportation Science Division (BTSD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is seeking qualified candidates to fill a Technical Professional Staff position. The work in this group supports the U.S. DOE Building Technology Office and other customers by developing state-of-the-art building equipment for energy efficiency and equipment-to-grid integration. Research areas include: energy efficient and grid-interactive equipment for heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC), refrigeration, water heating and appliances for residential and small commercial buildings (including electrical and natural gas driven systems).

Major Duties / Responsibilities

You will be responsible for coordinating and/or conducting laboratory tests on residential heat pump systems and other advanced building equipment prototypes.  A short-term project will focus on ratings-type testing (e.g., AHRI 210/240) of residential heat pumps.  The project will require the candidate to instrument systems, wire the instruments to the data acquisition system, and operate the environmental chambers according to the test plan. Troubleshooting equipment issues related to charge or airflow is often required in addition to identifying issues with the test setup that may result in erroneous data.  Other responsibilities include reading piping and instrumentation diagrams.

You must have earned a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering or a related field, M.S. is preferred. Five to seven years of relevant industry experience is highly desired, especially in the fields of heating, ventilation, air-conditioning, and refrigeration (HVAC&R), water heating, or appliances. The candidate should possess a strong background in design, development, or laboratory testing of HVAC&R equipment.  Knowledge of how HVAC&R systems are installed and operated in the field is also desirable.  Experience with the design of experimental setups, data acquisition systems, and sensor and instrumentation selection and calibration is highly desired.

Expertise in any of the following areas is of particular interest: (a) thermodynamics, (b) data acquisition systems, (c) instrumentation (e.g., thermocouples, RTDs, power meters, pressure transducers, etc.), (d) design of experimental setups, and (e) capacity and efficiency testing of HVAC&R equipment.

The candidate should have the ability to work within a team of engineers and technicians to successfully design, build and evaluate advanced building equipment and energy conversion systems.  Excellent communication skills (oral and written), as well as strong interpersonal skills to support team building, partnering, and leadership are required.
