Overview:
The National Security Sciences Directorate (NSSD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory leads scientific and technological breakthroughs to confront some of the nation’s most difficult security challenges. We develop interdisciplinary applications needed for the security of our nation today and target our vision on how these challenges may manifest themselves in a decade or more. The Autonomous Systems Group, within NSSD, specializes in exploiting the proliferation of low-cost, but very capable, technologies stemming from the growing uncrewed systems market. The group performs research and development towards new sensor and communication technologies, edge-computing, advanced autonomous behaviors, and machine perception. The aggregation of ORNL’s expertise in a wide variety of scientific fields, and our close relationships with partners in the Department of Defense and the Department of Energy, make the group a unique stakeholder in the uncrewed systems mission space. This multi-disciplinary team brings experts in their respective fields together to deploy systems in austere environments to enable world-class scientific experimentation and enhanced national security. The Autonomous Systems Group is seeking a qualified applicant for the role of Technical Professional to contribute to projects advancing the capabilities of uncrewed systems and robotic vehicles. The selected candidate will have the opportunity to contribute to a diverse set of projects of while working with a well-established group of engineers with a track record of bringing advanced research concepts to fruition.
Job Duties and Responsibilities:
- Contribute to software development efforts aiming to solve complex problems using uncrewed vehicles and associated technologies.
- Contribute to the maturation of web-based ground control systems and the continued design and implementation of communication standards used for beyond visual line of sight operations.
- Provide support for uncrewed operations, including completing on-site training to become a qualified operator on select vehicles and occasional support as a visual observer.
- Collaborate with team members to help develop new proposals, concepts, documentation, and publications.
- Support the fabrication of remote sensors, uncrewed vehicles, cables/connectors, and 3D-printed hardware.
Basic Requirements:
- Associates degree (with 8+ years of experience) or B.S. degree (with 4+ years of experience) in Computer Information Systems, Computer Science, Electronics, or related field.
- Familiarity with one or more of the following technology areas:
- C#, using Visual Studio 2022 and .Net 6.0+
- Uncrewed aerial systems (UAS) or uncrewed ground vehicles (UGV)
- JavaScript
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- U.S. citizenship
Preferred Qualification:
- Solid software engineering foundation and a commitment to writing clean, well architected code.
- Familiarity with HTML5 and CSS
- Familiarity with MySQL or similar databases
- Experience implementing complex algorithms on hardware with challenging size, weight, and power constraints.
- Experience using or modifying open-source autopilot (e.g., PX4 or Ardupilot) or robotics application software (e.g., ROS).
- Excellent teamworking ability and the ability to independently identify and solve challenging technical problems.
- Skills in any of the following technologies would also be advantageous: Git, React, AngularJS, jQuery, PHP, Qt, C++, Ubuntu
