The Remote-Sensing Group in the National Security Emerging Technology (NSET) Division at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) seeks to hire a research associate for photogrammetric applications.

The function of this position is to provide scientific expertise and software engineering support to a growing number of photogrammetric research and development projects that span a wide variety of scientific domains, applications, delivery platforms, programming languages, and hardware and software architectures.  The candidate must be comfortable working as part of a tightly integrated team and must be capable of supporting multiple projects simultaneously.

As a staff member on our team in the National Security Sciences Directorate, you will work on  challenging, multi-disciplinary projects that involve a wide variety of applications, delivery platforms, programming languages, and architectures.  You will apply your skills in real-world, large-scale computing projects.  You will work alongside Gordon Bell finalists proposing state of the art computing solutions for such hardware as Summit—the fastest supercomputer in the world.  You will apply your innovative experience toward geospatial applications, contributing to activities that span from research to deployed solutions in an agile processing framework.  Your efforts will provide insight into shaping the direction of our fast-paced, rewarding program.


Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Support applied data science, remote sensing, imaging science, and photogrammetric development, with a strong emphasis on developing solutions for orbital and aerial data collection platforms in the areas of:  sensor design, characterization, and issue mitigation; sensor data preparation, processing, and exploitation algorithm research and development; on-board data processing and sensor geopositioning. 
  • Support development of photogrammetric software that enables scalable and high-performance data generation, analysis, and distribution across desktop, mobile, and enterprise systems.  Must be able to work with and add to existing code bases that may or may not originate from within the GDA group. 
  • Provide technical support of photogrammetric science and photogrammetric software engineering efforts tied to multiple research and development projects, including the implementation of and adherence to Agile processes.
  • Work with researchers to capture, understand, integrate, and implement their requirements in developed software.
  • Report results in open literature journals, technical reports, software releases and at relevant conferences, when sponsoring agencies permit.


Basic Requirements:

  • Bachelors degree in photogrammetry, image science, remote sensing, geomatics, civil engineering, geography, geographic information science, computer science or computer engineering, environmental engineering, electrical engineering, physics, mathematics, or natural sciences.
  • At least 2 years of experience developing software related to photogrammetry.
  • This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Security Clearance. This position is a Workplace Substance Abuse Program (WSAP) testing designated position, which requires passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program in which employees are subject to being randomly selected for testing. The occupant of this position will also be subject to an ongoing requirement to report to ORNL any drug-related arrest or conviction or receipt of a positive drug test result.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Masters degree in photogrammetry, image science, remote sensing, geomatics, civil engineering, geography, geographic information science, computer science or computer engineering, environmental engineering, electrical engineering, physics, mathematics, or natural sciences.
  • Experience with the Community Sensor Model framework as well as the Mensuration Services Program (MSP) and Common Geopositioning Services (CGS).
  • Past hands-on involvement in significant photogrammetry, computer vision, geomatics, image science, remote sensing, or geospatial projects.
  • Experience with building desktop, web-based, and server-side applications.
  • Experience with software development best practices including, but not limited to:  Agile development; version control using Git/GitFlow or similar system.
  • Experience with Linux and Windows operating systems is preferred, experience with OS X is desired.  The ability to work from the command line is preferred.
  • Knowledge of a majority of the following subjects: (1) photogrammetry; (2) geometric sensor model design, verification, and validation; (3) uncertainty propagation; (4) map coordinate systems and transformations; (5) computer vision; (6) intramodal and multimodal image registration; (7) DEM and point cloud registration; (8) large-scale bundle adjustment; (9) surface extraction and object reconstruction from passive and active multiview geometric sources; (10) data conflation and fusion; (11) passive imaging modalities (VNIR/SWIR/MWIR/LWIR) and systems (multispectral/hyperspectral/ultraspectral); (12) active imaging modalities and systems (SAR/LIDAR); (13) spaceborne, airborne (manned and unmanned), and terrestrial imaging platforms;
  • Experience in the following languages:  Python, R, IDL, MATLAB, C/C++, Java
  • Experience with geospatial file formats and interoperability standards (e.g., NITF, JPEG2000, LAS, SICD, MISB, OGC web services).
  • Excellent communication (oral and written), organization, and decision-making skills.  Strong interpersonal skills and working effectively as a team member are essential.
  • Experience with open source spatial database technologies (PostgreSQL and PostGIS).
