Purpose:

The Building Equipment Research Group in the Buildings and Transportation Science Division (BTSD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is seeking qualified candidates to fill a Technical Professional Staff position. The work in this group supports the U.S. DOE Building Technology Office and other customers by developing state-of-the-art building equipment for energy efficiency and equipment-to-grid integration. Research areas include energy efficient and grid-interactive equipment for heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC), refrigeration, water heating and appliances for residential and small commercial buildings (including electrical and natural gas driven systems).

 

Major Duties / Responsibilities:

You will be responsible for coordinating and/or conducting laboratory tests on residential heat pump systems and other advanced building equipment prototypes.  Some of the initial focus will be on ratings-type testing of residential and light commercial A/C equipment.  The project will require you to instrument systems, wire the instruments to the data acquisition system, and operate the environmental chambers according to the test plan. Troubleshooting equipment issues related to charge or airflow is often required in addition to identifying issues with the test setup that may result in erroneous data.  You will also develop piping and instrumentation diagrams.

 

Basic Qualifications:

  • A B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field is required.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A M.S. degree is preferred.
  • A minimum of one year of previous industry experience is highly desired, especially in the fields of heating, ventilation, air-conditioning, and refrigeration (HVAC&R), water heating, or appliances.
  • You should possess a strong background in design, development, or laboratory testing of HVAC&R equipment. 
  • Knowledge of how systems are installed and operated in the field is also desirable.

 

Expertise in any of the following areas is of particular interest: (a) thermodynamics, (b) instrumentation (e.g., thermocouples, RTDs, power meters, pressure transducers, etc.), (c) capacity and efficiency testing of HVAC&R equipment.

 

You should have the ability to work within a team of engineers and technicians to successfully design, build and evaluate advanced building equipment and energy conversion systems.  Excellent communication skills (oral and written), as well as strong interpersonal skills to support team building, partnering, and leadership are required.
