We are seeking a highly motivated Technology Innovation Research Engineer to join our team. In this role, you will play a crucial part in advancing the integration of energy system modeling and simulation tools with advanced sensors, hardware, and cutting-edge visualization technologies, including virtual and augmented reality.
As a member of the Advanced Reactor Systems Group within the Advanced Reactor Engineering and Development Section of the Nuclear Energy and Fuel Cycle Division at ORNL, you will have the opportunity to collaborate with a multidisciplinary team of scientists and engineers to develop innovative solutions to advance fission, fusion and other clean energy systems.
Major Duties/Responsibilities:
- Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team of scientists and engineers to design, develop, and implement innovative solutions for integrating dynamic energy system modeling and simulation tools, with virtual and augmented reality technologies as well as instrumentation and controls
- Create software prototypes and applications that showcase the integration of modeling, simulation, instrumentation, control, and visualization tools, enabling enhanced data analysis and decision-making
- Conduct research and stay updated on emerging technologies and trends in energy system modeling, simulation, and visualization. Pursue research proposals to explore and evaluate state-of-the-art visualization tools and techniques for driving innovation in advanced reactor and dynamic energy systems
- Foster innovation by engaging external partners, industry stakeholders, and academic institutions through in-person demonstrations of software applications and related hardware
- Document and publish accomplishments and outcomes through workflow procedures, project reports, conference papers and presentations, and peer-reviewed journal publications

Basic Qualifications:
- A doctorate degree in Mechanical Engineering, Nuclear Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or related discipline
Preferred Qualifications:
- Proficiency in modeling and simulation for modern dynamic energy systems, with a working knowledge of tools such as Modelica or similar technologies
- Familiarity with basic video game development and 3D modeling using tools like Unreal Engine, Unity, Fusion 360, Solidworks, Blender, Maya, or equivalents and working knowledge of virtual and augmented reality technologies
- Strong interest in driving technological innovation through competitively funded research in related subject areas
- Experience in computer programming with languages such as C++, Python, Rust, C#, or equivalent
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory
- Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs

Special Requirements:
Q or L clearance: This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program.
