Overview: 

The United States is a partner nation in ITER, an unprecedented international collaboration of scientists and engineers working to design, construct, and assemble a burning plasma experiment that can demonstrate the scientific and technological feasibility of fusion energy. US ITER is a DOE Office of Science project hosted by Oak Ridge National Lab (ORNL) in Tennessee. We are seeking a Mechanical or Electrical Engineer who will perform design and integration of components for the Fueling Pellet Injection System and related subsystems. The position involves working with US and international contributors to ensure that the design conforms to physics requirements, engineering standards, integrated controls requirements, and technical interfaces. Additional responsibilities include design review preparation, development of product specifications, and authorship of statements of work for procurement. Occasional travel to the ITER site in Cadarache, France to support design review and integration activities will be required.

 

Major Duties/Responsibilities: 

  • Perform all aspects of pellet injection system design, including requirements management, interface control, specification development, base calculations, statement of work preparation, and design review preparation
  • Participate in technical review of final design documents and drawings including: Process Flow Diagrams, Control/Logic Diagrams, Process & Instrumentation Diagrams, Technical Specifications, analysis, calculations, and other design documentation
  • Write technical specifications and contribute to drawing production associated with the assembly of ITER components
  • Direct technicians and crafts in any required R&D testing of pellet injection mechanical elements.
  • Process and submit technical documents through the US ITER and IO document management systems.

 

Basic Qualifications:

  • BS in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering or related technical field with a minimum of 2 years of experience in the design, construction, and operation of mechanical systems, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Thorough knowledge of operating principles of piping systems, vacuum pumps, and process instrumentation, with an understanding of how to select appropriate equipment and materials for use in cryogenic, high radiation, and high magnetic field environments
  • Prior experience working with engineers and designers responsible for cryogenic systems and associated control systems
  • Working knowledge of CAD software and experience gathering information from engineering models and drawings

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • MS degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering or related technical field with 5+ years of experience in design, construction and operation of cryogenic systems and related control systems.
  • Familiarity or experience with hydrogen isotopes, fusion energy technology, and/or large electromechanical devices is highly desirable
  • Must be highly motivated, self-directed, and able to work in a team environment
  • Must have effective problem solving, time management, and communication skills
  • Knowledge of US ITER and ITER Organization (IO) procedures is highly desirable
