Overview: 

Oak Ridge National Laboratory is the largest US Department of Energy science and energy laboratory, conducting basic and applied research to deliver transformative solutions to compelling problems in energy and security. US ITER is a US Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Science project hosted by Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee. Partner labs are Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory and Savannah River National Laboratory. The US is a partner nation in ITER, an unprecedented international collaboration of scientists and engineers working to design, construct, and assemble a burning plasma experiment that can demonstrate the scientific and technological feasibility of fusion power for the commercial power grid. The facility is currently under construction in the Provence region of France. Other ITER partners are the People's Republic of China, the European Union, India, Japan, the Republic of Korea, and the Russian Federation. Involvement in ITER will provide significant benefits for the US for a limited investment (less than 10% of construction costs): The US will have access to all ITER technology and scientific data, the right to propose/conduct experiments, and the opportunity for US universities, laboratories and industries to design and construct components based upon cutting-edge technology in the areas of superconducting magnets, high vacuum systems, high frequency power transmission, and high energy cooling systems.

 

We are seeking a Quality Assurance Engineer who will support the Quality Assurance Section in the US ITER Project at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).  US ITER is currently designing and building assigned components through contractual arrangements with a number of suppliers (which are expected to grow) to provide hardware and software . You will provide Quality Assurance (QA) oversight of these suppliers at various manufacturing facilities as well as at the facilities of contracted design services providers. QA oversight of suppliers includes auditing, surveillance, and witnessing of manufacturing processes such as machining, coil fabrication, welding, heat treatment, leak testing and final delivery to France.  You will perform the duties of Quality Engineer under the direction of the US ITER Quality, Environmental, Safety, and Health Manager.

 

Major Duties/Responsibilities: 

QA program activities with the US ITER team will involve the following:

  • Support continuous improvement of US ITER QA program and systems engineering processes
  • Review and comment on documentation related to the US ITER project performance
  • Develop and/or revise Quality Plans in accordance with International Organization and US ITER requirements
  • Assist with supplier evaluation and selection
  • Review of the supplier`s product related documentation prior to acceptance.
  • Extensive domestic and international travel will be required.

 

Basic Qualifications:

  • An Bachelor’s Degree and a minimum of 2-4 years experience. A combination of education and experience may also be considered.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

The following attributes are preferred:

  • Ability to understand and interpret design documentation and accurately analyze project data.
  • Effective use of interpersonal and organizational communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Ability to think independently, work in a team setting, handle complex multi- task environments, and adhere to a very detailed project controls process.
  • Desire to understand and reinforce quality assurance as it applies to design and fabrication processes
  • Desire to work with large, complex projects within a highly regulated and dynamic QA environment
  • Knowledge of electrical engineering and instrumentation and control systems are a plus
  • Training and/or certificates in welding inspection, NDE, in-service inspection and quality management are a plus.
