The Information Technology Services Division (ITSD) at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is hiring a Virtualization Engineer to perform tasks related to Virtualized Framework Operations. The successful candidate will be a subject matter expert in several technical areas that may include authentication/identity and access management, data and information, integration, security, cloud computing, IaaS/SaaS/PaaS, Continuous Integration/Continuous Deployment, and DevOps.


Our Team

We are responsible for facilitating R&D projects.   We provide design, deployment, optimization, monitoring, and tooling support across multiple clustered infrastructures for the research organizations that we support.  We support clusters that range in scope from just a handful of nodes to 40,000+ cores.

Our primary goal is to partner with research organizations to enable research excellence and delivery at ORNL.  We work together as a team to help research programs identify the best solutions for their needs.  When we build environments for our customers, you will work with our team to design, implement and maintain the systems for our customers from inception to retirement.


This role will be responsible for the design, build and maintenance of computing services to researchers who process large data sets and/or develop code as a part of their project within secure environments.  You should have expertise in building private cloud environments and have technical expertise in cloud methodologies such as PaaS/SaaS/IaaS. You will be responsible for the availability, performance, scalability, and security of production systems.  You should have a good understanding of Authentication and Authorization, and Identity and Access Management policies.  You should have a strong desire to push the envelope and identify new technologies and opportunities and be able to communicate the potential benefits of those choices to others within the team and our research partners.  We heavily utilize automation and monitoring solutions minimize our day-to-day maintenance and you should always be looking for opportunities to optimize system management practices or system performance.  As the primary SMEs for these systems, you will work with technical POCs for the programs that we support to install and help tune the performance of various scientific toolsets.  You should be a collaborative and energetic team member who thrives on the opportunity to build trust and credibility, and ultimately become a trusted advisor to our research teams. 


We optimize our workflows and monitoring solutions to take advantage of operations staff, which significantly reduces the need for off-hours support. We also offer a flexible work schedule and utilize collaboration solutions to stay in contact. This position requires onsite presence. 


Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, computer information systems (or related field) with 5 years of experience or a combined work experience plus education of 8 years. An equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.
  • Proven virtualization engineering experience of complex, multi-purpose clusters
  • Experience with basic network infrastructure (firewalls, load balancers, DNS, DHCP) and virtualization technologies, including VMWare vCenter and vSphere.
  • Demonstrated ability to work both independently and collaboratively to troubleshoot, perform root cause analysis, identify and isolate technical issues in order to quickly and effectively resolve problems while providing timely status and progress reports to problem manager.
  • This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Advanced degree in computer science, computer information systems (or related field) with 8 years of experience or a combined work experience plus education of 12 years.
  • 5+ years if experience with hardware, software, application, data storage, systems engineering
  • Experience with scripting languages (such as PowerShell, Bash, Python, etc.) and CLI.
