Overview:

We’re hiring a Windows Systems Engineer to focus on designing, installing, configuring and maintaining systems for multiple research projects. This position focuses on supporting Windows Server operating systems and managing network file shares that researchers rely on daily. You will serve as the backup IT engineer for the Mobile Uranium Facility, with responsibilities including systems readiness, communications equipment maintenance, and contributing to design improvements that enhance facility operations over time.

 

While part of a larger team, primary support will be for specific projects, with one team member designated as your backup. You may also serve as backup for other projects. Our team collaborates closely, offering support for troubleshooting and reviewing proposed solutions when needed.

 

This position resides in the Research IT Infrastructure group in the Research Computing division in the Information Technology Services Directorate at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).

 

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

Windows System Engineering

  • Install, configure, secure, and maintain Windows Server 2019/2022/2025 systems.
  • Manage file shares, user access, and apply domain-level Windows updates.
  • Provide technical support to researchers and assist with deploying their solutions.
  • Monitor system health, troubleshoot issues, and ensure compliance with ORNL policies.
  • Document system configurations, procedures, and deployment notes.
  • Work within a ticketing system to track and resolve support requests.
  • Consult on hardware and software selection and procurement.

 

Backup Role – Mobile Uranium Facility (MUF)

  • Maintain readiness of Windows systems and communications infrastructure.
  • Manage Hyper-V virtual machines and maintain SQL Server for facility-specific applications.
  • Support networking equipment: switches, access points, bridges, time clocks, modems, and Starlink.
  • Manage backup services and ensure data availability.
  • Maintain facility camera systems and support handheld radios and mobile devices.
  • Assist users with desktop and instrument issues across the facility.
  • Digitize and manage technical documentation.
  • Deploy with the facility as needed to support operations.

Basic Qualifications:

  • A BS degree in computer science, computer engineering, information technology, information systems, science, engineering, business, or a related discipline and a minimum of five (5) to seven (7) years of aligned professional experience, or MS degree with a minimum of four (4) to six (6) years of relevant and aligned experience, or a PhD degree with up to three (3) years of relevant and aligned experience. An overall combination of equivalent education and experience may be considered.
  • A minimum of three (3) years of experience administering Microsoft Windows Server environments (2019/2022/2025).
  • Strong troubleshooting skills with the ability to perform root cause analysis and resolve issues independently or collaboratively.
  • Experience managing file shares, user access, and applying system updates in a domain environment.
  • Experience supporting researchers or end users in a technical setting.
  • Working knowledge of networking fundamentals and hands-on experience with network hardware (e.g., switches, access points, modems).
  • Familiarity with storage administration and backup solutions.
  • Understanding of Windows domain infrastructure and ability to support Active Directory environments.
  • Ability to work within a ticketing system to manage and resolve support requests.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Ability to contribute to and maintain shared technical documentation.
  • Demonstrated initiative and the ability to work independently with minimal supervision, while also collaborating effectively within a team.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience managing SQL Server in a small-scale or facility-specific context.
  • Experience working with VLANs and segmented network environments.
  • Experience with PowerShell and other scripting platforms for automation and system management.
  • Basic experience with Linux systems.
  • Familiarity with Active Directory environments (e.g., user/group management), even if not responsible for Group Policy administration.
  • Familiarity with Cradlepoint and Starlink communication systems.
  • Exposure to virtualization platforms such as Hyper-V.

 

Special Requirements:

  • Q Clearance: This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program.
  • Business Travel: ­­This position requires the ability to travel internationally for unspecified lengths of time with minimal notice.

Hybrid Eligibility:

This position is in Oak Ridge, Tennessee and requires onsite presence. We offer a flexible work environment that supports both the organization and our employees. A hybrid/onsite working arrangement may be available with this position, which provides flexibility to work periodically from your home, while reporting onsite to the Oak Ridge, Tennessee location on a weekly and regular basis.
