Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is seeking qualified applicants for the Information Technology Services Division to provide Windows systems support to the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR), the United States’ highest flux reactor-based neutron source, and the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS), the world’s most intense pulsed accelerator-based neutron source within the Neutron Science Directorate (NScD).

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Windows System Engineering and Administration
  • Design, install, configure, and maintain Windows Server systems, Storage, Backup, and VMWare clusters in support of enterprise needs
  • Ensure the secure and effective operation of computing systems through compliance with ORNL procedures, IT Internal Operating Procedures, and Cyber Security best practices
  • Work with other systems engineers and vendors to resolve hardware and software issues
  • Monitor systems performance
  • Install and configure software, both commercial packages and various open-source packages
  • Maintain documentation/notes on software builds and installs


Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related technical subjects and 5+ years of experience (or an equivalent combination of education and experience)
  • Experience with various Windows Server operating Systems
  • Experience managing a virtualized environment including tuning and maintenance
  • Extensive experience with the Windows Server Platform
  • Experience with virtual/physical backup solutions
  • Basic understanding of network communication and demonstrated troubleshooting techniques
  • Excellent interpersonal skills suitable for user support and ability to work well with peer system administrators

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Enterprise automated VM Cluster installation/configuration/management experience
  • A strong preference towards automation of system administration tasks including experience with Microsoft PowerShell and other tools
  • Strong knowledge of multiple current operating systems
  • Demonstrated ability to perform job tasks while considering cyber security risk of those tasks, and consulting with security professionals when necessary.
  • Understanding of storage, both direct or SAN attached and use cases
  • Knowledge of enterprise class server/storage hardware
  • Ability to work in a group and alone on various projects
